The Phillis Wheatley Community School is located at 2300 Dumaine St., in Faubourg Treme. A traditional red brick building, Phillis Wheatley is one of five schools in the FirstLine Schools Network and was named for the first female enslaved poet in the United States. Serving pre-kindergarten through grade eight, Wheatley enrolls nearly 800 students.
The school’s vision states that they seek to prepare students for college and careers by nurturing their minds, bodies, and spirits. They do this by using a child’s natural curiosity and turning it into a love for learning. This fosters critical thinking skills, creativity, and the perseverance to find solutions. They also offer children multiple opportunities throughout the day for movement and focus on building healthy relationships between the students and their communities.
This co-educational institution provides buses and vans to transport children to and from school, as well as before and after-school care. There are also multiple extracurriculars for students to join, with club sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, flag football, and volleyball available. Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, the school is wheelchair and other mobility aids accessible, ensuring every child in the community can receive an education. The Phillis Wheatley Community School is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
