A French-English dual language program is the most prominent feature of Lafayette Academy, a coed public middle school for grades six through eight. With a student body of approximately 154 students, the school offers a student-teacher ratio lower than 10-to-one. Named for the celebrated Revolutionary War general, and also known as Middle School 256, Lafayette Academy is one of eight New York City public schools with a French-English curriculum. About 1,000 total students enroll in such programs city-wide, ranking French-English as the third most popular dual-language choice after Spanish and Chinese. Bilingual faculty at Lafayette Academy conduct social studies and advanced language arts classes in French, with other lessons taught in English. In eighth grade, children study math in both languages. Electives and sports help vary the curriculum and include algebra, art, chess, chorus, cooking, debate, drama, soccer and track. Lafayette Academy also has its own school newspaper, student council and yearbook. The school is open to all students who are residents of Manhattan, but applicants must be French heritage speakers or have participated in elementary school-level French dual language and bilingual education programs. A screening process determines proficiency or fluency level of applicants, with many coming from Harlem’s New York French American Charter School.

As the former mayor of Lafayette Academy, I can’t express enough gratitude for the incredible three years I spent there. Before I joined Lafayette, I was a quiet, reserved individual who preferred to stay in the background. However, this school transformed me, helping me break out of my shell and gr...
