Sharing the William O’Shea Campus with several other coed public schools, MS 247 Dual Language Middle School, also known as DLMS, offers an English-Spanish immersion curriculum to around 230 students in grades six through eight. Its distinctive white brick building on West 77th Street was erected in 1957. With more than 20 full-time teaching positions, the school has an impressive student-teacher ratio of less than 10-to-one. DLMS offers a project-directed, theme-based curriculum, with a heavy concentration in the language arts. In addition to core academic classes in math, history, literature, and science, all students take three years of Spanish, visual arts, physical education and dance, with at least two public dance performances per year. For advanced study there are accelerated classes in algebra, Spanish and living environment. A full menu of electives enhances the basic learning experience, including art, book club, coding, computer science, creative writing, debate and STEM. Students at DLMS are very active in extracurricular activities, among them clubs devoted to fitness, running, yoga, leadership, service learning, a spelling bee, student council, a talent show, technology, visual arts and the yearbook. School sports include basketball and volleyball. Mentors from such entities as Salesforce and the National Basketball Association visit DLMS to support students and share experiences. Also available is an annual overnight trip to Camp Manice in the Berkshires, as well as campus visits to New York University and Fordham.

Dual language is one of the best middle schools in the city. they are strict but fair. The teachers really do care. My son has been to four schools in the last 2 years. Dual Language was the best one. It is tough at first, but really does prepare child for a good high school. check out there ranking...

According to the Dept of Education's 2009-2010 NYC School Survey, MS 247 has nearly 80% new teachers who have been teaching only 1-3 years. Almost 25% less than one year! Same principal has been at this school since 2003 and has had little success keeping good, experienced staff. When you chase that...
