With its roots dating to 1967 when the Manatee County Girls Club was established, Just for Girls now includes alternative education for middle school girls, as well as before- and after-school programs. The vision of the entire organization is to create a community where “young girls can grow up safe, capable and smart.” Just for Girls covers all aspects of a child’s development – academics, behavior and character – through enrichment programs and experiential and service learning. Grade-level reading and English language arts are stressed, with the idea that the strong foundation will lead to improvements across the board. Besides individual achievements in the classroom, community connections matter. Students learn to help others through programs like Reading Buddies. Positive behavior is rewarded and reinforced with the use of incentives and leadership and advocacy opportunities. The girls also learn to express themselves and work together when they participate in the school’s music and ballet programs. Just for Girls alternative education program falls under the auspices of the Manatee County School System, so it’s free of charge and the bus system runs to and from the school. Parents and students sing the school’s praises, with one middle schooler saying, “Just for Girls helped me become a better person.” What more could a school ask for?
