Pioneer Elementary School opened its doors in 1868 as one of Boise's initial academic institutions, but closed 1905 the school had closed to make room for the Carnegie Library. Today, the new Pioneer Elementary school is centrally located in Boise's West Valley neighborhood on West McMillan Road and serves students from pre-kindergarten to the fifth grade. As a leading Arts Magnet Academy, Pioneer Elementary School’s academic performance is second to none, with students consistently performing well above the state average in math, reading and science. Pioneer’s dedicated teaching staff strives to foster a safe, supportive and intellectually stimulating learning environment by differentiating instruction, integrating visual and performing arts, and instilling a lifelong love of learning. The school offers a robust arts-based curriculum that includes singing, dancing, performance, drawing, music and more. The campus features dedicated art and music rooms, modern classrooms, a cafeteria, a performance area, a playground and a half-acre recreation field. Students love the annual musical productions, themed holiday school events and spirit rallies where the Pioneer Puma encourages them to persevere while they learn and build strong connections with each other. Parents are welcome to participate with the active parent-teacher organization that administrates school events and the school’s annual Read-A-Thon Fundraiser. I loved my experience there as a student. I always felt welcome and was constantly given opportunities to grow both academically and emotionally. I had issues with anger and control growing up, but my Pioneer counselor stepped in and allowed me to have sessions with her outside of class time. It helped teach me to be a more empathetic person while keeping me on track with my studies. I loved the yearly performances we did each year and how it released my inner performer.

I would not recommend this school for children with special needs. The IEP team is disconnected, oblivious to the needs of children, and unwilling to work with parents.
