Good Shepherd Episcopal School is a private school located along Forest Hill Avenue that focuses on location-based learning within the Forest Hill community and values outdoor education. The K-8 school offers classes for approximately 90 students with a 8:1 student to teacher ratio and is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. All teachers have a bachelor’s degree, with nearly half who’ve earned a master’s degree. The school is divided into Kindergarten, the lower school (grades 1 through 4) and the middle school (grades 5 through 8). The school’s philosophy is three-fold, focusing on community, diversity and possibility. According to the school’s website, its mission is “to inspire each child to achieve academic excellence within a diverse, nurturing community that builds character and fosters respect for one another and our shared environment, locally and globally.” Enrichment classes include computer science and technology, physical education, Spanish and the Lego robotics team. Students also experience immersive programs for studio art, performing arts and a STEAM-based makerspace. Taking a tour or visiting an open house is part of the application-based admissions process. Once a student is accepted, families can apply for financial aid.

Good Shepherd has been an excellent fit for our family, especially post-pandemic challenges. Our child has thrived in this school academically and socially for the past three years.
