The idea and mission for the Richmond Waldorf School was hatched in 1985, when John and Sara Moses began a kindergarten class in their home. The private school officially opened for the 1996-1997 school year and now serves students in pre-K through eighth grade. The school is tuition-based and offers families the opportunity to apply for financial aid and scholarships. This school offers a Waldorf Education, which dates back more than 100 years, and is based on teachings, insights, and principles of education founded by scientist Rudolf Steiner. A Waldorf Education is about understanding human development that addresses the growth needs of the child. Students participate in school plays and woodworking, play an instrument or sing, as well as other activities for a well-rounded education that allows them to explore their own interests. Waldorf hosts celebrations and ceremonies throughout the school year, including The Rose Ceremony at the beginning of the school year. The Rose Ceremony welcomes rising first graders to the elementary school when older students give each first grader a rose and walking them through a flower arch—a symbol of new beginning.

I am a parent of two RWS students and have been part of the community for over 10 years to date. I love this school for a number of reasons. The most important is the community my children have become part of and the friendship they have established. Very few schools make kids smile. This one does!!!

This is a school that focuses on a developmentally appropriate curriculum incorporating a love of nature, respect of self and others, and is Northside's hidden gem. The children are kind and accepting and play at their age level. It is a calming environment with a deeply rich educational experience.

We have been at RWS for 6 years, and my two children absolutely love it here. It's a diverse, caring community, and a lovely place to watch your children flourish. Emphasis is placed on child development, movement, language arts, science, arts, music, and arithmetic. The teachers are engaging and yo...
