Claire Lilienthal Elementary is an alternative public education school located in San Francisco and serving the Marina District neighborhood. Named after Claire Lilienthal, a native San Franciscan who attended this school as a child, Claire Lilienthal has a rich history of the positive educational improvements and strong parental involvement that its namesake fostered during her time serving as president of the board for the school. To this day, the school seeks to honor her legacy by developing proactive programs to help the student body grow mentally and emotionally. This is accomplished through project-based learning, California standard curriculum and writer’s workshops. Academically, Claire Lilienthal takes the lead as they score far above the national average in both English and Math. Enrichment courses offered include art, ceramics, dance, gardening, guitar, theater and many more. Claire Lilienthal offers a robust afterschool program for both campuses. The students at the Madison campus may attend the Claire Lilienthal After School Program (CLASP) while the Scott campus students make their way to the Presidio Community YMCA. These programs feature homework club, arts and crafts, and organized games. In addition, the school has a thriving sports program for their middle school students. Students can participate in baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, track and soccer. This school has a student body population of approximately 697 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 16-to-1, lower than the national average. The school is divided into two campuses. Kindergarten through second grade students attend the Madison Campus located on Sacramento Street, and the third through eighth grade students attend the Winfield Scott Campus on Divisadero Street.

I hated going to Claire Lilienthal. The school is small, the sports are terrible, and the community is very unsupportive.

We feel incredibly lucky to be at this school. The locations, teachers, community, academics, sports, K-8 model, magical CLASP aftercare and students are all outstanding!

We were initially apprehensive about starting a new school for our kid and about the public school system in San Francisco generally. We were pleasantly surprised and overall we are delighted. Our kid is very happy at school and comes home explaining all the exciting new things he did in school that...

We couldn't be happier with our experience at Lilienthal. My children are thriving and love to go to school. There is an amazing parent community. And the teachers are fantastic.
