Located in West San Jose, John Muir Elementary is a public school within the Cupertino Union School District. Opening its doors in 1957, the institution is named after John Muir, a famous nature writer born in the United Kingdom. He immigrated to California and became a naturalist, authoring many books on the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park. He also founded the Sierra Club in 1892, which is still active today. Muir Elementary is considered modest in size, serving around 250 students. It currently has a student-to-teacher ratio of 24-to-1, slightly higher than the rest of the school district. This school has the first Mandarin Language Immersion Program of an elementary school in the state of California, which was established in 1991. Students that would like to continue the Mandarin immersion program can attend Miller middle school. Students at Muir Elementary tend to have high test scores, scoring above the state average for both reading and math. This justifies their ranking better than 95% of elementary schools in the state of California. The school operates on an early dismissal schedule on Tuesdays, which means that kindergarteners are released at 1:50 p.m. while the rest of the grades are released at 2 p.m.

This school offers an intensive environment for learning Chinese, which has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it enables children to dedicate considerable time to mastering Chinese. On the other hand, the environment can be tense, with strict teachers and pushy parents. It's somewhat strange, almo...

Great teachers, great administration and very engaged parent community leads to one of the best schools in this area. Many school events held throughout the year really pulls in the school community and gives the school a great small town vibe where parents really get to know the parents and the kid...

The coronavirus pandemic and full-grade-and-a-half of distance learning was a painful reminder of the changing world and the paradox of preparing our children for an uncertain future. I remind my child that right now we are fine, and I talk about our time at John Muir Elementary with gratitude knowi...
