Home of the Cyberhawks, STEM Middle Academy is a public Springfield magnet school that opened in 2008. Many students attend STEM Middle Academy before moving on to the Springfield High School of Science and Technology next door. Students in sixth through eighth grade can attend this middle school. STEM learning is integrated into every aspect of the school’s curriculum.
STEM Middle was one of 13 Massachusetts schools awarded a Solar Lab grant. In 2011, solar panels were installed on-site, and teachers received training on integrating them into their classrooms for research projects and data interpretation and analysis. The solar panels are still operational today; anyone can log on to the Enphase website to see how much power the panels produce. STEM Middle also has a weather station on the roof above the main entrance, a unique feature that provides live weather updates on multiple flat-screen displays within the school.
Besides academics, students can get involved in multiple clubs and afterschool sports during the school year, but STEM Middle’s offerings don’t stop there. Summer programs include a music camp, which allows students to work with music recording equipment, and a Crime Scene Investigation camp is perfect for students interested in forensics.
