Zavala Elementary School is a leading provider of pre-kindergarten through fifth grade education in East Austin’s Holly neighborhood. It’s also a cultural landmark and is even listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1936, the school was named for Lorenzo de Zavala, an instrumental figure in Texas history who helped draft the constitution of the Republic of Texas. Today, Zavala continues to shape Texas history by preparing the next generation of trailblazers. Well-rounded curriculum with an emphasis on the arts and STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, prepares Zavala students for in-demand careers. They get hands-on experience in Destination Imagination, a global competition which challenges teams to use creativity and ingenuity to solve real world problems. After-school enrichment programs include Lego Robotics Club, Computer Science Club, and clubs dedicated to art, athletics, cooking and coding. The school’s garden is a nationally-recognized wildlife habitat. Zavala also offers a special program just for learning disabled preschoolers, to ensure they receive the best head start. The academic foundation students receive at Zavala Elementary School serves as the cornerstone for the innovative college preparatory programs offered at both Martin Middle School and Eastside Early College High School.

When my children walk down the halls, everyone knows their names, the teachers and staff are open and communicativ...
