Many locals commute to Virginia Beach for work using the Marsh Causeway, the only roadway leading to the mainland. While the region is an island, it’s not a tourist location, as full-time residents occupy most homes. “I grew up on the island but settled on the mainland,” says Janet Rose, a real estate agent with Howard Hanna. “It’s a neat place to raise a family. It’s full-time residence, very few seasonal or summer homes.” The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10. The national average is 4.

In Knotts Island, life intertwines seamlessly with nature. “There are always birds chirping and sea turtles crossing the road,” says Kristin and Mark Williams. Many green spaces on the island host animals of all shapes and sizes. The Mackay National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1960, plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the community. This refuge focuses on waterfowl and is home to many marsh-dwelling animals. If they hold a North Carolina fishing license, anglers visiting the wildlife refuge may use small boats or fishing platforms to cast year-round. Fishing areas are mainly stocked with bass and catfish. Willowgait Farm is known for its wildflowers and hosts flower picking in the spring, as well as art and design workshops. Knotts Island Ruritan Park features a small playground for children and a skate park for adults and teens to practice their moves. In the summertime, locals may take a 5-minute boat ride to Carova Beach and see wild horses. On the mainland, Sandy Point Resort Campground offers tents, cabins and vehicle camping near the coast for sailing or fishing trips. The nearby vacation spot has a boat ramp and several hard-top basketball and volleyball courts. Residents may launch kayaks at the public boat launch and marina on Brumley Road.

Scholarship funds raised at Peach Festival
“They have a very active Ruritans club,” says Rose. “It’s a community organization that gives back to the community. They do a lot for the schools, and if someone needs a ramp, they can build stuff for them.” The Knotts Island Ruritan Club hosts the Peach Festival in July. The island used to be an orchard, and the peach festival celebrates this history by selling peaches, peach-flavored beverages, fare food and other artisanal items. The money raised through the festival supports local causes and a scholarship fund for several graduating seniors seeking higher education. Willowgait Farms hosts an annual Artisan Fair where participants may purchase blown glass, jewelry, soaps and other handmade items. Religious services are hosted at Knotts Island United Methodist Church and Knotts Island Baptist Church.

Locals venture into town for groceries or head to the Knotts Island Market, where they can find fresh produce. Pearl’s Bay Villa, known simply as “Pearls” by locals, prides itself on being the only bar and restaurant on the island. Visitors listen to live music while playing pool and enjoying a brew. Pearls offers restaurant services from May to September, serving fresh fried fish, scallops and other seafood plates. Dog rescue and tea shop Puppa Cuppa serves tea and helps local rescue dogs find their forever homes. Blue Dragonfly Farm, a local farm, uses milk from their Nigerian dwarf goats to hand-make all-natural soaps and lotions, which they sell at local festivals and through their website.

Elementary School supports military-connected students
Knotts Island Elementary School is the only school on the island. It is designated as a Purple Star School for its support of military-connected students and receives a B-plus from Niche. Middle and high school students commute to school every morning by ferry or boat. Currituck County Middle School, which receives a B-minus, offers career and technical programs focused on agriculture, technology and business. Students at Currituck County High School, receiving a B rating, can participate in after-school activities, including the International Thespian Club.

Commuters use North Carolina 615 and Currituck Ferry Terminal
The island is located 30 miles from the Virginia Beach oceanfront and is a 45-minute ferry ride to Currituck. North Carolina 615 is the only vehicle access point to Knotts Island. The Currituck Ferry Terminal on Knotts makes six round trips to Currituck daily and is free to ride. The Norfolk International Airport is 38 miles away.

Important to know
Flooding and erosion are part of island life. However, since flooding has occasionally affected travel into Virginia Beach, there have been efforts to mitigate flooding in the area through Currituck County, which provides residents with a list of contractors and consultants who can help residents reduce flood damage. “Depending on the way the wind blows,” says Rose. “You may have water come across the marsh roads, but nothing that would prevent you from leaving the island. You get downpours, but I was never stranded on the island.”
