Natural surroundings and Austin city amenities
Residents of Austin’s Lost Creek neighborhood aren’t lost. In fact, they know exactly where they are. They’re living in an established development flanked by nature preserves and two different country clubs. With a well-organized community of neighbors, access to both MoPac and Capital of Texas Highway and highly-rated schools — all in a neighborhood with wide streets flanked by sidewalks shaded by mature live oak trees — Lost Creek combines the conveniences of city life with all of the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
Abundant outdoor activities
Named for a section of Barton Creek that marks the neighborhood’s southern border, Lost Creek caters to Austinites who enjoy spending time outdoors. While it’s common to see residents out walking or jogging through the neighborhood, Lost Creek is also bordered by the Barton Creek Greenbelt. It offers multiple hiking trails that lead to the Barton Creek Wilderness Park, where adventurers will find even more trails to explore, waterfalls and rock-climbing opportunities. With 28 different species of freshwater fish calling Barton Creek home, anglers have plenty of chances to test their skills.
Within the neighborhood, there are also two neighborhood parks maintained by the Lost Creek Neighborhood Association, a volunteer-managed nonprofit. Lost Creek Neighborhood Park has a playground that includes a climbing structure and a cabin playhouse. Boulder Creek Park is a more subdued natural area, offering visitors plenty of open space to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery. The Westlake Country Club and the Barton Creek Country Club are also nearby, offering members access to golf, tennis, fitness programs and on-site dining.
Top-ranked schools
Children in Lost Creek are served by the Eanes Independent School District, which earns an overall rating of A-plus from Niche. Students can attend Forest Trails Elementary, Westridge Middle and Westlake Hills High School, all three of which earn an A-plus from Niche. Students at Westlake High School can participate in any of the more than 150 school-sponsored clubs or the 17 varsity-level sports. Families may also choose from several nearby private schools, including St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, which is rated as the No. 2 best Christian high school in Texas by Niche, which also gives the school an A-plus rating.
Home is where the heart is
Homes in Lost Creek tend to reflect the upscale nature of the surroundings, and each house in the area has its own distinct personality. Low-slung ranch-styles stand next to towering Tudor-inspired homes, all blending seamlessly with the neighborhood’s overall vibe. Homes here are well-built, and that quality paired with the neighborhood tends to equal a higher price tag. “It would be rare to find a home here for less than $1 million,” says Realtor and central Texas native Nick Podrebarac. “Prices can easily reach $3 million or $4 million, but you really get what you pay for.” The median home price in the neighborhood is around $1.7 million, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $546 per square foot. A cozy three-bedroom/two-bathroom ranch-style home can sell for $320,000, and prices can go as high as $5 million for a four-bedroom/five-bathroom contemporary home.
Retail therapy and culinary sustenance
When they feel the need for retail therapy, those living in Lost Creek don’t have to travel far. Barton Creek Square is less than 4 miles away, where shoppers will find 149 different retailers and restaurants anchored by Macy’s, Nordstrom and Dillards. The Hill Country Galleria, about 9 miles to the west, is home to retailers that include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ann Taylor Loft and Barnes & Noble; H-E-B and Whole Foods Market also both have locations in the mall.
When dining out is on the menu, residents love to get cozy on the heated patio at The Grove Wine Bar & Kitchen, where the menu features everything from salads to sandwiches to filet mignon. Diners can also design their own pizza or choose from one of the restaurant’s specialty offerings. And oenophiles will delight in perusing The Grove’s wine list, which extends for six pages and includes 10 different wine flight options.
Getting around
One trade-off to living in Lost Creek is that there is no mass transit option in the neighborhood, so it is entirely car-dependent. But Capital of Texas Highway serves as the neighborhood’s eastern border, and that thoroughfare offers nearby access to MoPac for commuters making the 9-mile trip to downtown Austin.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
