The Westgate Neighborhood homes does have decent size driveways.
Residential neighborhood in an ever-changing city
While Westgate may be small, it has a lot to offer without having to leave the neighborhood. Having a shopping plaza within walking distance is a nice perk for residents, especially when the grocery store is also a community hub. It’s a taste of what Austin was like before its rapid growth. “I think the Westgate area is a little slower to change than the South Lamar area,” says Mike Lopez, owner of Austin Gift Company, which opened nearly 25 years ago. “They just haven’t gotten that far yet.” The homes here, many of which are ranch-style, still have their own unique personality. The neighborhood is residential enough to enjoy the quiet on a porch swing, but just a short drive to Downtown and South Lamar.
Do some shopping or some self care at the Westgate Shopping Center.
A shopping center that's uniquely Austin
The Westgate Shopping Center has a grocery store, dance studio, movie theater and various shops. An offshoot of H-E-B, the Central Market has a cafe and dining section within the grocery store that often hosts events, which creates a sense of community beyond just shopping. Within the same plaza, there’s Amy’s Ice Creams, a local chain that offers unique flavors like Triple Berry Tres Leche on Tasting Tuesdays. Another spot that’s unique to Austin is Captain Quackenbush’s Coffeehouse with horror movie trivia and Taylor Swift karaoke. For a dine-in or takeout option, Sap’s Ver Fine Thai Cuisine dishes out classic Thai entrees and a great tea selection.
Locals can enjoy shopping at Central Market for all their home needs.
Social gatherings at the grocery store
It’s common to run into a neighbor at the grocery store, even more common when the store is also a venue. “They’ll have live bands out in the courtyard dining area,” Lopez says. In March, Central Market hosts rotating musicians on Thursdays, Fridays and the weekends. Some acts like the Jimi Lee Band give the audience a chance to show off their moves with swing dancing. Jazz Talent of Today and Tomorrow meet up every 4th Saturday so middle and high school students can work with a professional musician in the Austin Jazz Workshop.

Condos and townhomes will start at around $375,000 plus a homeowner’s association fee for a 3-bedroom home with access to amenities like a community pool. For a remodeled 3- to 4-bedroom ranch-style, the price will range from $700,000 to $950,000.
