Leap Year: Advice on How to Take Advantage of the Extra Day
This February Has a Bonus Day!
2016 is a leap year. What’s a leap year, exactly? Well, every four years or so, we give February an extra day, just to keep our calendar synchronized with the movement of the earth around the sun. Without leap year, our holidays would slowly drift through the seasons. Before too long, there would be snow on Independence Day and fall leaves on Easter Sunday. What a confusing world that would be!
So what will you do with your extra day at the end of this month? Celebrate it like a holiday, with a party and friends?
Yes, we know: leap year isn’t an official holiday. But maybe it should be. What would you do if you had an extra day, free and clear? How would you spend it? We’ve got some great ideas, but you don’t have to wait until February 29th to use them – any day off will do.
It’s important to give back to your community in some way, and volunteering is an ideal outlet for your altruistic tendencies. Pick a cause that’s close to your heart, and find a local organization that could use a helping hand.
As an added bonus, some employers give their workers days specifically for volunteering, and if you’re a small-business owner, pitching in is a great way to create goodwill for your firm.
Use Your Head
There’s so much knowledge out there, just waiting to be discovered. If you’ve been craving some intellectual stimulation, use your extra day to learn a new skill or immerse yourself in a subject that’s always interested you, if only you had an extra day to read all about it!
Learn to code, learn to knit, read up on Greek mythology or try out a new recipe – it’s your extra day, so it’s your call.
Get Some Exercise
It’s easy to let a busy schedule get in the way of your home fitness regimen. But when you have a whole extra day to spend, you can probably find an hour or so to hit the gym, go for a walk, or take a yoga class. You’ll feel much better, and when you feel good, you look good, too!
Take a Road Trip
If you only have a day to spend, flying across the country might be a bit excessive, but chances are good that there are a few places you’d like to see within driving distance of home. Fire up the car and hit the open road! It’s time to go on an adventure!
Catch Up on Your Favorite Series or With Old Friends
Binge-watching may not be the healthiest way to spend your extra day, but we’re not here to judge. You could kick back on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, your comfy PJs, and your trusty remote. What happens next? You’re just about to find out.
If you’re like most people, it’s been way too long since you chatted with your old best friend from high school. Why not give them a call and see what they’ve been up to? Who knows? Maybe you’ll end up rekindling a wonderful friendship.
Recharge Your Batteries
Even the most enjoyable careers can wear you down now and then. You could spend your extra day taking it easy. Pamper yourself with a massage or a pedicure. Get your hair and nails done. Treat yourself to a new outfit. You deserve it!
Buy a Home
OK, so buying a home is a process, and you probably won’t get it all done in a day. Still, it’s a great time to buy right now, and you could spend that extra day getting your ducks in a row. Get your paperwork organized. Check your credit. Get preapproved for a mortgage. Schedule a viewing of that home you’ve been eyeing.
Get Ready to Leap
How will you spend February 29th? Well, that’s up to you. However you choose to use it, we hope it’s time well spent. Happy leap year!
