When you take a look at all of the variables, one can make a sound argument that winter is actually the better time to buy a new home. If you wonder how that can be, then here are three compelling reasons why winter is one of the best times of year to move.

In the warmer months, there is an abundance of potential home buyers all vying for the very best properties on the market. As a result, most won’t get their first picks. But in the winter months, competition drops faster than the mercury because families with children typically want to be in their homes before the start of the new school year.

For most families, if they weren’t able to find a new home in the summer, they pull back their home shopping habits until the following spring. That’s a lot of potential buyers that you won’t have to compete against, meaning your bid will hold greater weight.

While it is true that the home inventory in the winter isn’t as pronounced as it is in the summer, the homes that are available are being sold by serious sellers. Sellers who list their homes in the winter really want to sell, so they will often drop their asking prices to make their homes more enticing to those buyers who are still looking. This equates to a winter buyer being more likely to score an incredible deal on a home.

In addition to getting your home at the best possible price, you’ll also be able to have a stronger negotiating hand, thanks to the lack of competition and the seller’s desire to sell their home. This means you might be able to sway the seller to perform (or at least pay for) certain upgrades or improvements to the property before you take ownership of it, as well as to handle select fees and other expenses.

Of course, you don’t want to be too demanding. There is a line that you don’t want to cross, so be respectful of the seller and you’ll both enjoy a positive transaction.

This means that you will probably be able to hire a moving company to move all of your belongings to your new home for much, much less than you would if had you purchased a home in the summer. You’ll also have an easier time scheduling things like having your cable and Internet installed, and your utilities turned on.
