As summer heats into full swing, it can sometimes be hard to get a balanced breakfast. Some studies show that hot weather can actually decrease your appetite, but that doesn’t mean your body doesn’t still need nutrients and plenty of hydration.
Smoothies are a great way to maintain a healthy diet even when the hot weather is unbearable. They are healthy — full of vitamin C, B, and other important nutrients, and they also hydrate your body well. We’ve put together a list of smoothie recipes from some of our favorite food and wellness blogs, so that you can have delicious fruity drinks in the morning before the heat of the day really kicks in.
Strawberry Coconut Smoothie
This yummy recipe comes from A Couple Cooks, an amazing blog that can aid you in meal planning and healthy eating. This particular smoothie recipe calls for avocado and coconut milk, which give it an extra creamy essence. Adding a bit of bee pollen will give your immune system a healthy jolt.
Frozen pineapple will keep the smoothie cold, but you can also add additional ice. A Medjool date will give the smoothie an extra dose of natural sugar, but if the strawberries and pineapple are sweet enough for you, you can forego the date.
Blueberry Coconut Super Smoothie
We found this festive recipe at Green Kitchen Stories, which offers yummy vegetarian recipes and pretty foodie pictures. The recipe calls for coconut water instead of coconut milk — this means that it won’t be quite so creamy, but the coconut water is a great way to jumpstart your daily hydration.
Ginger and a handful of walnuts give this super smoothie a healthy kick. Add as much ginger as you want! We found that the walnuts work best if they are already a bit crushed up, otherwise they might not fully blend into the smoothie. This breakfast smoothie is perfect for an extra hot day because of the hydrating power of coconut water.
Tropical Groove Smoothie
The Tropical Groove Smoothie, brought to us by My New Roots, is the perfect way to get your day started while pretending that you are on a tropical beach vacation. Sara Britton, author of Naturally Nourished and the genius behind My New Roots, concocted this smoothie while on vacation in Bali.
Her blog post on this smoothie is very informative, suggesting that you shouldn’t drink extremely cold smoothies even on a very hot day because it takes longer to digest. The Tropical Groove smoothies are delicious and nutritious, with ingredients like turmeric and ginger. You can practically taste the warm tropical breeze.
Summer in a Cup Smoothie
Dana from The Minimalist Baker describes this smoothie as “mega creamy, perfectly sweet, not too tart, satisfying…” and we were convinced right from the get-go that this would be an amazing summer smoothie.
With raspberries, bananas, pomegranate juice, and the option to add a handful of greens, this smoothie has everything that we could ask from a light summer morning breakfast. Almond milk gives this smoothie a creamy tang, but you can substitute with coconut milk or regular milk, depending on your preference.
Blueberry Peach and Oat Smoothie
This smoothie from Ella Woodward of Deliciously Ella, takes the idea of a morning cup of porridge and flips it on its head. You can use fresh peaches or frozen, depending on your preference and how cold you want your smoothie. Hemp seeds, oats, and almond butter or tahini make this smoothie a little extra hearty. It’s perfect for post yoga eats or a midmorning snack.
