A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning. So why not create a nesting ground for teachers to flourish and pass on their knowledge to students?

Behind every great leader is a great teacher. And behind every great teacher is a supporting school district. Grab a pencil and paper, here are the best cities for teachers!

1. Cambridge, Massachusetts

Home to some of the most prestigious schools in America, Cambridge is known for it’s high quality of education. Smart Asset reports that the city has an annual per pupil spending of $27,650 — the highest of the cities ranked. This means that teachers in Cambridge adequately receive the resources needed to teach effectively. They also have high salaries to compensate for their hard work, making Cambridge one of the most teacher-friendly cities!

2. Solon, Ohio

Recognized as one of the best places to live and one of the best places to raise kids, Solon is also recognized as one of the best cities for teachers. The Solon City School District has earned it’s way to one of the best school districts in the nation as well as the best in Ohio. These rankings are traced back to the high quality of teachers. Teachers in Solon receive a very competitive salary to preserve the districts reputable curriculum.

3. Mercedes, Texas

Known as “The Queen City of the Valley,” Mercedes has become one of the most teacher-friendly cities in America. South Texas Independent School District, located in Mercedes, is ranked the best place to teach in Texas as well as the district with the best teachers in Texas. The student-teacher ratio is 14:1, less than the national average of 16:1. Available in Mercedes, the Homes for Texas Heroes Home Loan Program provides assistance to teachers who are also homebuyers.

4. Northfield, Illinois

Located 19 miles north of Chicago, Northfield is known as the best place to teach in America as well as the best school district in Illinois. This is due to their prestigious academics, high quality teachers, and large variety of extracurricular activities. The New Trier Township High School District has a low student-teacher ratio of 14:1, allowing teachers to focus better on learning objectives. Northfield also offers a special education tuition waiver program for teachers to exempt them of paying tuition.

5. Riverside, California

Just east of Los Angeles, the city of Riverside is a great location for teachers. According to CNBC, “Riverside California topped [the] list as the metro area where teacher salaries go the furthest.” On average, teachers in Riverside earn an annual salary of $62,192. When adjusted for the cost of living in California, teachers on average make $58,025. Riverside also took the #2 spot for the highest employment growth among large counties according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
