St. Patrick’s Day is an annual celebration in honor of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. Every year, Irish or not, people all around the world celebrate the nation of Ireland and its people. It’s a day to have fun, drink and wear a lot of green! Grap your bagpipes and piper’s plaid as you check out these cities that honor St. Patrick’s Day in style!
Got Celtic roots? Do you love folklore and traditions surrounding ancient Ireland like the leprechaun? If so, Boston is the place to enjoy all things Irish! Boston has over 20 percent of Irish American residents, the most of any US city. Irish immigrants played a major role in Boston’s history and it’s no wonder many intricate parts of Boston traditions are laced with Irish traditions as well. Boston hosts an annual “Southie” parade, an event that takes place every St. Patrick’s Day in South Boston.
Although Boston has the largest Irish American population by city, New York has the most concentrated Irish population in the country. NYC is a hub for a lot of European cultures and in many of the boroughs, Irish ancestry is evident. You can find tidbits of Irish culture at the Irish Repertory Theatre, The New York Irish Center, and more. NYC also hosts the largest and oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade that was established in 1762.
Chicago is another US city packed with Irish culture. If you’re looking to go green this St. Patrick’s Day, Chicago has you covered, literally. Every year, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the Chicago River is dyed green for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The festivities around the river also include bagpipe bands, Irish food and drink vendors, and the parade has floats that honor the holiday’s tradition. The dye that goes into the river is over 45 pounds of fish-friendly vegetable coloring.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Fest is a major hit in New London. The festivities begin when the Shamrock Club of New London changes the city’s name to New Dublin. The St. Patrick’s Day parade is a nationally recognized event that brings in over 125 parade attractions like bagpipe bands, floats, festive clowns, and more. This festival also has leprechaun hi-jinks that St. Patrick himself would be proud of!
Most people wouldn’t think of sunny San Diego as a hotspot for St. Patrick’s Day festivities but it is! The ShamRock Block Party includes three stages of concerts with this year’s headliners being Justin Caruso, Everlast, and California based rap legend Too Short. The concert also includes an after party and other festivities around the shows. California knows how to party!
