Best Cities for Vegetarians

by Mahogany WaldonApril 24, 2018

Vegetarianism is a dietary category that groups individuals who do not consume meat or restrict meat in some way from their lifestyle. There are different types of vegetarians, such as lacto-ovo (those who still eat dairy and eggs), and there are completely different sub-groups that fall within vegetarianism, such as veganism. No matter what you consider yourself to be, vegetarianism is growing across the country as people embrace health and wellness alternatives. Here are some of the best cities for vegetarians.
A map highlighting the best cities for vegetarians, vegans, and pescatarians including New York City, Laredo, Texas, Anaheim, California, Portland, Oregon, Chicago, Illinois, and Orlando, Florida.

New York, New York

The Big Apple has the most restaurants with vegetarian options. NYC also has a wide variety of juice bars, plant-based food chains, and even food trucks that cater to vegetarians. With over 100 restaurants for veggies lovers to choose from, New York is a great city to live in if you don’t eat meat. The city also has the most salad shops (per square foot of population) than any other place in the country.

Portland, Oregon

This West Coast city comes in second place as one of the nation’s most vegetarian-friendly cities. While Portland is a great place for vegetarians, it’s even better for pescatarians – those who don’t consume meat but still eat seafood.

Anaheim, California

This sunny California city is well-known for being one of the best places to live a vegetarian lifestyle. Anaheim is the second-largest city in California’s Orange County. Not too far from other Cali hot spots for health and fitness like LA, Anaheim is a fun city with lots of options for vegetarians.

Laredo, Texas

Living the veggie lifestyle can be pricey, but this town in the Lone Star state is high-ranking in its affordability for vegetarians. Although Texas is normally associated with cheap Tex-Mex cuisine and street food, you can also save some coin here by consuming a plant-based diet. We all know fruits and veggies can be expensive!

Chicago, Illinois

Though the Windy City is known to be the hog butcher of the world, it’s slowly becoming a hub for those that don’t eat meat. Furthermore, Chicago isn’t just great for vegetarians: it’s also awesome for those who have gluten restrictions as well. Scientifically, gluten intolerance is known as celiac disease and it affects more than 200,000 Americans per year, and those who follow a gluten-free diet tend to avoid wheat, barley, and rye products.

Orlando, Florida

Florida is a great state for health enthusiasts. In fact, Orlando has the highest number of restaurants with vegan options. About 31% of Orlando’s restaurants serve vegan selections. Most vegans don’t consume or use animal byproducts at all, including honey and some cosmetics, so it’s great to know that such a high percentage of Orlando restaurants and businesses cater to this strict lifestyle.
