Getting Into (or Away From) the Winter Season

Winter is a great time of year to get away from it all. Once you’ve calmed down a bit from the highs (or lows) of the holiday season and the real winter weather starts to set in, getting out of town for a long weekend or a full-on winter vacation can be a great way to refresh yourself during the coldest and wettest time of the year.

Some folks like to double down on the cold though, and head for the slopes or a great resort town – a true winter wonderland. There are, after all, many towns that cater to travelers in the winter months, providing incredible snow-dusted ambiance and experiences. Other folks prefer to leave the cold and wet of winter behind for more tropical climes. Here is our breakdown of the best of both worlds.

True Winter Wonderlands

There is something to be said for traveling to a place that really heats up when the mercury drops below zero. Even if you aren’t an avid snowshoer, snowboarder, or skier, winter resort towns like those listed below can be great winter destinations for all the indoor activities they have to offer, like shopping and dining. Here are a few of the most popular true winter wonderlands in the US:

1. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole receives nearly five hundred inches of snow any given year. It is nearby both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park (both renowned for their winter beauty) and boasts great shopping and dining as well as great skiing and snowboarding. But, to make it your home there full-time may not be an option, as the median home price is just over $1.4 million.

2. Breckenridge, Colorado

Another true winter wonderland, Breckenridge lies at the base of the Tenmile Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Its old-time feel, complete with colorfully painted storefronts dating back to its mining days, coupled with its status as a world-class winter sports destination, makes this a very popular winter destination.

Wonderlands a Bit Farther Away From Winter Weather

There is also something to be said for escaping your winter clothes and sitting poolside under an umbrella with another umbrella in your drink. For those looking to escape the winter doldrums and head to a more tropical climate, the US has plenty of amazing winter weather destinations for sunshine, as well:

1. Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii is a hot winter vacation destination, and for obvious reasons. The islands are the southernmost of all the US states, and they enjoy weather year-round that would be the envy of most North American states, even in the summer. Honolulu is a terrific city to visit and the perfect base of operations for exploring the big island, Maui, and Kauai. If you’re looking to relocate there permanently, the median home price is just under $800,000.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

The Big Easy has rebounded from Hurricane Katrina in a big way. It makes a fabulous winter destination during Mardi Gras, obviously. To experience the city and its charming and unique culture without feeling like you’re basting in your own juices, try to visit during the winter (outside of Mardi Gras time). And if you end up loving it enough to move there, you’re in luck. The median home price is still affordable at between two and three hundred thousand.

Planning a Winter Getaway

Planning a winter getaway is a great way to get out from under the drudgery of a season that can seem to drag on forever in some locations. Get some sun or some fresh snow, enjoy a new setting, and maybe go on an adventure. Winter destinations like these are just waiting to receive you.
