Free Home Design and DIY Workshops to Make Your House a Home

After you’re done getting everything unpacked in your new home, it’s time to decorate and make it your own. However, there may be some spaces that are a little tricky to decorate or you want to try your hand at some DIY projects, but don’t feel like you have the skills. What if I told you that there are companies out there who will help you with your challenging spaces or project needs for free? Very few people know that these services exist, but once you do, they’ll open your eyes to a world of possibilities.

If you’ve ever looked through a catalog for Pottery Barn or West Elm, you can see how well they mix patterns and colors to make any space inviting. However, on the back of the catalog, there’s a featured advertisement for design services and hands-on decorating workshops. The decorating workshops are held on set days and will cover season specific decorating like tablescapes, outdoor entertaining, and more. As for the design services, they require you to schedule an appointment with your local store. They recommend bringing pictures of your specific space that you may need help decorating. Then, you’ll meet with one of their interior decorators who can suggest ideas as well as demonstrate with items in the store. Once you’re done, they offer a 10% discount if you choose to buy anything from the store. Pottery Barn and West Elm are not the only companies who offer this free service, so don’t be afraid to ask.

I’ve personally done this service with three troublesome spots in my home and it was such a great experience. I had a difficult time figuring out what to do with open bookcases in my living room so, I snapped a few pictures of the space and took them to an appointment I set up. I told the design consultant what our style and color scheme was at the time and the look that I was trying to achieve. We walked around the store and she explained how to create different vignettes and gave me ideas using items I already owned.

Taking on home improvement projects may seem intimidating, especially if you have never done a home improvement project before. Thankfully, Home Depot not only has how-to tutorials on their website, but they also offer hands-on project demonstrations. You can learn anything from painting, laying flooring, to installing a kitchen backsplash. Home Depot also has workshops geared towards women and for the kiddos in your life. After you sign up and arrive for the class, there are hands-on instruction with actual materials and an associate to walk you through step by step.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a first time or seasoned homeowner; these workshops make it possible to get the designer look without the hefty price tag. Even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush or hammer in your life, there are opportunities to learn new skills. The best part of any home you buy is making it your own and it’s even sweeter when you’re the one who did the work.
