Doggy Dream Home Makeover: Rashida Bank’s Puppy “Paw”lor

Today’s doggy DIY masterpiece is spearheaded by Rashida Banks. Taking Irish pub inspiration to create a puppy “paw”lor, this DIY dog house is the ultimate stay-cation for any pet.

Puppies and poppies and a pear-colored dog house? OH MY! When Homes.com reached out to ask me if I wanted to be a part of a playhouse makeover for dogs I could not resist. For starters, it’s going toward a great cause and my two amazing pups can now have a relaxing place to rest outside. I’m so thrilled to be making over this little playhouse with two other designers who also received the same playhouse to re-imagine for their pups! Here’s where you come in: you vote for your favorite dog house makeover! The winner of the contest will receive $750 to give to their animal charity of choice. And there’s something for you too! One lucky voter will take home $250! For this dog house makeover I was inspired by classic Irish pubs. The pubs of Ireland are always full of colors and full of flowers. Below is a design board of the elements I brought into the makeover.

Since this was my first time participating in the Homes.com Crafting for Charity series, I needed to build it first to see the layout in real life. It’s so cute, but I wanted to give it a custom paint job.

The playhouse is made of plastic, so in order to get the paint to stick you need a good coat of primer before applying paint. Be sure to use a primer that works on all surfaces.

Now to the paint color! I wanted something unexpected and charming just like Irish Pubs. So I went with a beautiful curry green color called “Thai Curry.” The undertones of this color are just so beautiful! To keep with the lighter fresh feel, I painted the roof in a soft warm cream color called “Authentic Tan” (I did the same color on the inside of the house).

Many Irish Pubs have gold lettering and numbers. So I used these address letters and cut them out to spell out the address and house name: The Pawlour! Yup, my pups have an address: 550 Pup Place, Washington, DC!

Now let’s talk about the finishing touches. I topped off the house with a lantern wall sconce with DIY battery operated lights in it.

I then painted their “treat slot” also known as the mailbox slot a reddish color. Next I added a yellow fire hydrant treat jar right next to their treat slot for quick delivery when they do something good.

The fresh water on the side of the house for those hot summer days of course had to be in gold because my pups are fancy!

The inside is complete with an orthopedic plush bed and bone pillows for the best comfort in town. And their toy box is not too far away when they want to keep busy.

And finally, what’s an Irish Pub inspired dog house without flowers!?

This project was a complete joy and labor of love. My dogs are obsessed with their new home (almost as much as I am!) and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way it turned out. Not only do the dogs have the perfect place to call home, but with your help, we can help other pets in need, too! Like I mentioned before, this contest isn’t just for fun– it’s for a way to give back to an animal shelter of the winner’s choosing. After all, animal shelters provide us SO much joy and happiness through our pets, why not let us do the same? So take a look at my complete dog pad, and remember to vote starting this Friday, September 18 at 12pm EST!

Thank you so much Homes.com for inviting me to participate in this competition. Now it’s up to you guys to vote for your favorite flipped dog house!
