Whether you’re a city lover at heart or prefer a more countryside feel, we’ve found a place that offers you both! Columbus, Indiana has seen several consecutive weeks of increased home search traffic on Homes.com, and it’s easy to understand why: buyers want the amenities that cities offer without sacrificing the charm and serenity of small town life. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up our top 5 reasons why Columbus should be on your home search radar!

One-of-a-Kind Architecture

Believe it or not, Columbus is known as a top world city architecture lovers. In fact, The New York Times even called Columbus one of America’s most design-sophisticated communities! Central Location

Columbus is less than an hour from Indianapolis, Indiana’s state capital and metropolitan area. With six highways running throughout the city, Indianapolis is often referred to as “The Crossroads of America” — and with several major companies planting headquarters at this Crossroads, Columbus is the perfect distance for commuters. If you’re looking to venture outside of Indiana for weekend or day trips, Columbus is about 3 hours from neighboring states Ohio and Kentucky.

Quality of Schools

If you’ve got children, this one might be of interest! Columbus has Bartholomew County’s largest school system, and is part of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, serving around 11,000 students across several elementary, middle and high schools. The district is made of dedicated educators and administrators who’ve created a unique educational framework to ensure every students’ needs and learning capabilities are met. Not only is Columbus committed to excellence in the K-12 sector, but offers several university and community college campus options for higher education. 

The Heart of Downtown

In most locales, the best way to get a feel for the community is through the downtown area; and Columbus does not disappoint! Featuring a collection of local shops, restaurants and historic architecture, this neighborhood has it all. And, it’s rich with history too…Columbus’ oldest bar and restaurant (and one of the first in all of Indiana) is located right downtown! Simply named “Columbus Bar,” this local favorite has served specialty beers and hometown pub food for over 75 years.

Another local favorite? Zaharakos Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor and Museum, the perfect place for ice cream sundaes, homemade sodas and milkshakes. Fun fact: the shop is over 110 years old and much of the original decor is still in place today! Zaharakos is consistently named as Indiana’s best ice cream shop. Next time we’re in Columbus, we’re already planning to try all of their famous sodas!

Cost of Living

With an average home cost in 2021 of $220,481 and a median of around $190,000 — it’s no surprise folks are taking advantage of Columbus’ affordable market!
