Many of the houses here were built in the 1960s and '70s, with ranch-style and contemporary homes and estates making up most of the mix, though some modern architecture and new construction can be found. Park Road Park is a 2-mile drive on local streets and features four basketball courts, six baseball fields, three picnic shelters, volleyball courts, playgrounds, trails and an eleven-acre lake. Little Sugar Creek Greenway extends nearly 4 miles from Brandywine Road to 7th Street in Charlotte, connecting numerous attractions such as Freedom Park and Charlotte Nature Museum. The many segments of the greenway create a corridor for walking, biking and running. Barclay Downs Swim & Racquet Club has a swimming pool, six tennis courts and a pickleball court, but there's a waitlist for membership. The Charlotte Symphony entertains thousands of locals every summer at the Summer Pops concert series at Symphony Park. Patrons can buy tickets in advance or at the gate.

To the north in Myers Park, there's a small corridor of commerce featuring fashion retailers, a few salons and Bicycle Sport, a shop that sells and repairs every type of bike. Local restaurants include the breakfast and lunch spot LittleSpoon Eatery, the casual Selwyn Pub, and The Jimmy, an Italian restaurant that serves house-made pasta and wood-fired pizzas. SouthPark Mall's growing directory of stores includes Nordstrom, Belk, Dillard's and specialty and brand-name stores. Annual Halloween fun
A family-favorite event is Barclay Downs' annual Halloween parade. The costumed march finishes with a celebration at the organizer's home, which is decorated as a haunted house for the evening. That job has been passed down over the decades, with the current host performing that duty for more than a decade after taking over from the previous organizer's 12-year run. "It's just a chain of people keeping those traditions alive," McGrath says.
Only 4 miles to uptown Charlottte
Most residents drive to work, but Charlotte's Area Transport (CAT) bus stations are also available. To get to Charlotte's Center City, residents can drive five miles via back roads. Charlotte Douglas International is a 10-mile drive via Billy Graham Parkway.
