Quiet suburb with easy access to work and play
Just a mile north of Ohio State University's campus, Cranbrook is another of the cozy, midcentury neighborhoods in Olentangy West. Initially set aside for soldiers returning from the Revolutionary War, this stretch of woodlands and gentle hills became a prime location nearly 200 years later during the 1950s as Columbus's population overflowed into the surrounding rural areas. Today, Cranbrook is known as a quiet, secluded community near schools, work and entertainment. "I always say this neighborhood is one of the best-kept secrets in Columbus because of its great location," says Kelly McCafferty, Cranbrook resident and Realtor with e-Merge Real Estate. "You're close enough to walk to Ohio State football games, and it's next to Upper Arlington, which has a lot of shopping and amenities. You get to piggyback off that without paying the taxes of Upper Arlington."
Most homes in Cranbrook were built in the mid to late 1950s.

Midcentury homes with updates and renovations
Tidy, slightly sloped front yards are accented by small gardens and a mix of mature trees. Curved streets pass split-levels and ranch-style homes with attached garages and two-car driveways. "While most homes were built in the mid to late 1950s, people have made modern updates like fresh paint, new floors or additional fencing around the backyards," says McCafferty, who also points out that the northern and southern sections of the neighborhood offer different advantages. "The neighborhood's south side is insulated from traffic, while the north side is much larger and has more access points," she explains. Housing prices range between the high $200,000s and the high $400,000s, varying based on renovation and upgrades like in-ground pools. Condos are also popular in the area. A one-bedroom unit starts at the low $100,000s before maxing out in the low $300,000s for those with the highest square footage.

School within walking distance
Located in the center of the community, Cranbrook Elementary School is within walking distance for most students and has a C rating from Niche. "One of the great things about the school is that it's part of the Ohio State University family housing program, so you may have a PhD candidate from overseas living here with their spouse and children, so they feed into that school," says McCafferty. "More than a dozen languages are spoken at the school, so they pride themselves on exposing students to diversity." Students letter enroll at C-minus-rated Ridgeview Middle School before attending Centennial High School, which has a B rating.

Fairy houses on the Smith walking trails
Smith Nature Park spans 4 acres, featuring walking trails winding throughout a densely wooded area. Locals have added some whimsy to the paths by hanging fairy houses from trees or hiding them in foliage on the trail's edge. These "fairy trails" are meant to offer kids and parents alike some extra fun as they take in local nature. At Clinton-Como Park, residents can play a game of tennis or take advantage of the playground. There's also an access point for the Olentangy Trail, which spans more than 14 miles along the river that shares its name. The Chadwick Arboretum is an admission-free reserve popular among locals who want to explore the lush tree canopies, learning gardens, sculptures and botanical print collections.

Easy access to OSU
McCafferty says Cranbrook is "loaded with professionals because the neighborhood is right next to Riverside Hospital, and it's just 3 miles to the hospital at The Ohio State University." Locals can avoid major highways and take Kenny Road instead to reach the hospital and The Ohio State University's campus. To access restaurants, museums and parks in downtown Columbus, residents can catch a COTA bus at one of the stops on West North Broadway or drive south along State Route 315. A series of interconnected sidewalks make the area within the neighborhood very walkable, though access to restaurants and shopping will require a car.
