Harrisburg is a historic mill village close to Augusta
Once the site of a buzzing 1800s mill village along the Augusta Canal, locals say the neighborhood of Harrisburg is where historic charm meets modern convenience. “Harrisburg definitely has a lot of character and it's close to downtown,” says Anna-Marie Boykin, a Realtor with Southeastern Residential. “There's a big revitalization effort going on there right now. The homes are very charming, but a lot of them hadn’t been kept up. Investors are coming in and modernizing them.”
Craftsman bungalows dating to the early 20th century
Located less than 5 miles from downtown Augusta, those looking to move to Harrisburg will find a many early-1900s bungalows, primarily in the Craftsman styles. Some still feature original characteristics such as stained-glass windows, fireplaces and clawfoot bathtubs. They typically range in size from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and rest on small lots of one-tenth of an acre. “Harrisburg is a great place for anyone looking for an affordable home that’s close to downtown,” Boykin says. “You can get a house that’s been renovated, for not a lot of money. It’s an up-and-upcoming neighborhood.” Prices here often range anywhere from less than $100,000 to $250,000, depending on whether a house has been renovated. “The average time on the market is 64 days, but it really just depends,” Boykin says. “Something distressed might go quickly because investors want to swoop in and renovate it and flip it. So, it could be few days, or it could be multiple weeks.”
Students are served by Richmond County Schools
Public school students in the area may attend W.S. Hornsby Elementary and W.S. Hornsby Middle, both of which receive D-plus scores from Niche. Lucy C. Laney High School is named after Lucy Craft Laney, who in 1883 founded the first school for Black students in Augusta. It earns an overall grade of C-minus. All three schools are part of Richmond County Schools.
A quaint dining atmosphere at Chef's House
Harrisburg residents have easy access to nationally known chains and independent shops, including Lanier’s Meat Market within the neighborhood. Larger grocery stores, such as Kroger and Publix, are less than 5 miles away on Washington Road. Locals frequent Chef’s House for Southern comfort foods such as fried chicken, collard greens and peach cobbler, which are served buffet-style inside a pink cottage.
Trekking historic trails in Harrisburg
Recreation options abound in Harrisburg. At the nearby Salvation Army Kroc Center of Augusta, locals can shoot some hoops, swim laps at the pool, work out in the gym or unwind by soaking in the hot tub. The neighborhood’s Vernon Forrest Park offers a traditional playground and tennis courts, while a portion of the 10-mile Augusta Canal Historic Trail passes through Harrisburg. Those who visit will likely see kayakers paddling the canal, joggers running along the paved paths and the historic Sibley and King mills, which still stand along the waterway.
Concerts and local markets in nearby Augusta
For entertainment on a wider scale, downtown Augusta is just five minutes away. Popular pastimes include catching a music concert at the 8,000-seat James Brown Arena or the more intimate Miller Theatre, a restored 1940 movie palace. And from March to November, many locals spend their Saturdays supporting area artisans and food vendors at the Augusta Market, which takes place at 8th St. Plaza along the Savannah River.
