History and redevelopment meet in Harrisburg

Harrisburg grew as a mill village for textile workers along the Augusta Canal, and that heritage is still visible today. Early-20th-century cottages line the neighborhood’s residential roads, and brick mill remnants and interpretive signage dot the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, which borders the neighborhood. The towpath, once a route for mules hauling goods, now draws runners and cyclists to the waterfront. And redevelopment is underway, bringing updated community spaces and modern housing to this historic Harrisburg.

What to know about homebuying in Harrisburg

Harrisburg is a relatively affordable neighborhood of Augusta, with a median sale price of around $130,000. For reference, the median sale price in Midtown Augusta is roughly $170,000, while Summerville's is about $270,000. These neighborhoods are located just south, while to the north, West End has a median sale price that is about the same as Harrisburg’s. Undeveloped parcels of land or homes that need work often sell for under $100,000. Small single-story homes, like 1900s Craftsman bungalows, cottages and shotgun-style homes, typically range in price from the low $100,000s to the low $300,000s, depending on size, age and condition. “Harrisburg definitely has a lot of character, and it's close to downtown,” says Anna-Marie Boykin, a Realtor with Southeastern Residential, who has sold homes throughout the neighborhood. “There's a big revitalization effort going on there right now. The homes are very charming, but a lot of them haven’t been kept up. Investors are coming in and modernizing them.”

How Harrisburg's past shapes its present and future

Harrisburg grew as a mill village along the Augusta Canal in the late 1800s, and for more than a century, the textile industry shaped nearly every part of life here. The mills closed in the early 2000s, and decades of disinvestment followed. But that trajectory has started to shift, as Harrisburg has attracted significant investment in recent years. The HUB for Community Innovation, a $22.3 million nonprofit campus funded in part by Augusta National Golf Club, opened in 2022 as the home to five different local nonprofits focused on building a more vibrant community. . Grassroots nonprofit Turn Back the Block has spent more than a decade renovating vacant homes and is now working with the University of Georgia on park and streetscape improvements.

Exploring outdoor spaces in and around Harrisburg

Harrisburg offers access to traditional neighborhood parks alongside access to one of the region's most significant historic waterways. On Telfair Street, Vernon Forrest Park has tennis courts, a playground and open grassy areas. A portion of the Augusta Canal Trail, a roughly 8-mile path that’s popular with joggers and cyclists, runs just outside the neighborhood. Along the trail, you’ll see remnants of old mills, and kayakers and canoers regularly paddle the canal’s calm waters.
