What makes Summerville one of Augusta's most desirable neighborhoods

Summerville, or just “The Hill,” sits on a ridge northwest of Downtown Augusta. It was established as a summer retreat in the 1780s, perched away from the heat and mosquitoes along the Savannah River. In the early 20th century, luxury hotels and scenic golf courses turned Summerville into a winter resort popular with wealthy Northerners. Today, it remains a seasonal destination. The Partridge Inn is one of the most sought-after places to stay during the Masters Tournament, held at Augusta National Golf Club in the nearby Lakemont neighborhood. Local restaurants, the Augusta Country Club and the Summerville Campus of Augusta University further the neighborhood’s established feel.

Summerville’s housing stock and prices

Summerville may be historically affluent, but that doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible. Single-family home prices start in the mid-$100,000s. One-story houses with two to three bedrooms and bathrooms can reach the mid-$400,000s, while two-story properties typically run from the low $500,000s to about $1.2 million. “There’s young and old architecture, small cottages and large mansions, that make up the neighborhood. It comes together cohesively,” says Ann Marie McManus, vice president of Meybohm Real Estate, who lived in Summerville. “It was originally a community of country homes. Post-World War I, when many Augustans returned home and became architects, they began building in European styles like Mediterranean with clay tile roofs, Spanish Revival, English Tudor and Dutch Colonial. In the 1930s, more Craftsman-style homes were built as Augusta grew west from downtown, and a streetcar made commuting easy.”

Attractions, things to do and community life in Summerville

Because of its history, Summerville has several local landmarks. Well-known attractions include:

  • Augusta Country Club, which borders Augusta National and features an 18-hole course designed by Donald Ross, a swimming pool and courts for racquet sports
  • The former Bon Air Hotel, now an apartment building, which was built for Northern tourists and helped establish the city’s golf culture
  • St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, a Gothic Revival building that’s more than a century old
  • Westover Memorial Park, one of Augusta’s oldest and most prominent cemeteries, with more than 80 acres of park-like grounds
The Summerville Neighborhood Association is a driving force behind local preservation efforts. It hosts the annual Tour of Homes, a weekend-long event where the public can view the neighborhood’s historic houses and gardens. For more things to do in Summerville, Hickman Park features a playground, grassy areas and a small children’s museum, while the Appleby Library, housed in a Greek Revival building, hosts events.

What Masters week is like in Summerville

Augusta National Golf Club, just north, generates buzz during the first half of April, hosting the Masters since its inception in 1934. “It’s fun to see all of Augusta spring cleaning and sprucing,” McManus says. “There’s an energy that you can’t find anywhere else.” When golf fans come to Augusta, many stay in Summerville. The Augusta Rule allows locals to rent their home for up to 14 days without having to report the income. On Walton Way, The Partridge Inn, an early-1900s hotel, is an upscale, exclusive place to stay, where rooms can book up several months in advance. Less than a mile from Augusta National, the hotel is known for its rooftop bar, wraparound verandas and daily shuttle to the course during the tournament.

Where Summerville residents shop and dine

Summerville is known for local dining, with most options on Monte Sano Avenue. “Summerville is the most walkable neighborhood in Augusta, and it’s not even arguable,” McManus says. “There’s such a strong sense of community there. You only have to appear at a restaurant two or three times, and they’ll treat you like a regular.” Neighborhood favorites include:

  • Becks, which serves seafood in its rustic dining room
  • Arsenal Taproom + Kitchen, known for its craft beer and grilled cheese selections
  • Sheehan's Irish Pub, which offers American and Irish fare from a cozy brick cottage
  • Relic, a quaint café with coffee, sandwiches and pastries
Everyday amenities are within a short drive. To the west, in the Forest Hills neighborhood, the Daniel Village shopping center includes a Food Lion grocery store, a Walgreens pharmacy and other services. To the north, Surrey Center in West Augusta upscale shopping and dining, while Augusta Mall, about 4 miles west in North Leg, features more than 100 retailers.

What to know about public, private and secondary education

The Richmond County School System serves Summerville. Families can apply to four magnet schools, specialty programs and in-district transfers. Highly rated private schools, including Westminster Schools of Augusta, Episcopal Day School and Augusta Preparatory Day School, are also in Augusta.

Anchoring the east side of the neighborhood, Augusta University's Summerville Campus, built on the grounds of a former U.S. arsenal, features the school’s liberal arts, business and education programs. “It’s great for daily walks. They have a brick-lined walk with beautiful monuments that discuss the history of the area,” McManus says. “You can enjoy a performance at the Maxwell Theatre, and it’s a short ride to the sports complex where you can take in Jaguar basketball.”
