Living in Lakemont puts you next door to golf’s most famous course

During the first week of April, the Masters turns Augusta into golf's biggest stage. And Lakemont, home to Augusta National Golf Club, is at the center of it all. Behind private gates, rows of Southern magnolias lead to the famous Greek Revival-style clubhouse, where generations of the game’s top players have stood, hoping to win the iconic green jacket. During the tournament, roughly 40,000 patrons a day crowd the club's fairways, and the hum of the gallery is heard on television screens across the country. But that’s just one week on the calendar. The rest of the year, Lakemont is a quiet suburb, where families walk dogs in the morning and single-family homes sit a short drive from grocery stores and schools.

What to know about buying a home in Lakemont

Brick ranch-style homes from the mid- to late 1900s line Lakemont's residential roads, and mature oak and pine trees dot yards with enough room for games of catch. Houses often range in price from the mid-$100,000s to the high $300,000s, depending on size, age and condition. For some homeowners, proximity to Augusta National can pay off during Masters week. “A lot of people rent out their houses to people coming in town for the tournament,” says Jacquelyn Christensen, a Realtor with Executive Partners Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate who has sold homes throughout the city. “There’s something called the Augusta Rule, where you can rent [for up to 14 days] with no federal or state taxes taken out.”

What Masters week is like in Lakemont

You've likely seen Augusta National Golf Club on your TV screen, but Lakemont residents drive past it daily. Loblolly pines shade the manicured 18-hole course, which is often regarded as the most exclusive in the country, and dogwoods and azaleas bloom just in time for the Masters each April. In the days leading up to the main event, the Augusta National Women's Amateur highlights the next generation of female players, while the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals hosts boys and girls ages 7 to 15 on the same grounds. Altogether, these competitions bring a palpable energy to the city. Traffic nearly doubles on Washington Road, restaurants are packed and conversations revolve around the tournament.

The Richmond County School System serves Lakemont. The district offers several specialty programs and four competitive magnet schools, with admission based on grades, attendance, conduct and a district-administered reading and math assessment.
