Bay Point has modest homes in reach of Bay Area hubs
Bay Point is a census-designated place on Suisun Bay, about 30 miles northeast of Oakland. Home to 24,000 people, it was called West Pittsburg before a 1993 vote changed the name to distinguish it from the bordering community of Pittsburg. While Bay Point was a prosperous early 20th-century lumber, steel and shipping town, the depression hit hard, and the community has struggled to attract and retain industry since. Residents find work in construction, healthcare and retail, and many commute by freeway or rail to other areas for work. “You have a lot of people that move to Bay Point who are commuting to Oakland and San Francisco,” says Amber Hom, Realtor with Realm Real Estate who has sold homes in the area since 2007. “People do a lot of different things–some are tech people and some work in San Francisco in hospitality. A big factor is its proximity to BART.” Bay Point is quiet and residential and surrounded by outdoor recreational opportunities. Hiking, water activities and scenic views are nearby, and Bay Point has long, warm summers during which to enjoy them.

Single-family homes throughout community, condos in Bay Point West
The median home price in Bay Point is $540,000, slightly lower than the national average and well below San Francisco metro area prices. Most dwellings are modest single-family homes, but there are also apartments, condos and manufactured homes in the community. Housing prices are lower in Bay Point than in other Bay Area communities. “Affordability is definitely a factor,” says Hom. “There are first-time buyer options and also some very nice move-up options, and you get more for your money. What costs $800,000 in Bay Point would bring $1.5 million in the South Bay.” In neighborhoods closer to the bay, like Anuta Park and Shore Acres , homes are tightly spaced and are in the middle of the price range. Bay Point West hugs the freeway and is also mid-range for single-family homes, but it has some condominium complexes near the highway interchange. More expensive homes are in the hills south of the highway. Many have four and five bedrooms.
Manufactured homes can be found in the Bay Point West neighborhood.

A few shopping and dining options, more in Concord and Pittsburg
Casual eateries, including several taquerias, line Willow Pass Road, a thoroughfare dissecting Bay Point. Oak Hills Shopping Center is located at the freeway interchange and includes a Safeway grocery store, small shops and chain restaurants. As options are limited in town, many residents take a ten-minute drive in either direction to Pittsburg and Concord for their shopping and dining needs. “Sometimes they call Bay Point ‘East Concord,’” says Hom. “You can go either way and find lots of good restaurants and activities.” Pleasant Hill Shopping Center in Concord has dozens of brand-name stores and a movie theatre. Pittsburg has unique shops and restaurants in Old Town along Railroad Avenue and near the waterfront marina.

Outdoor activities include hiking and biking the Delta de Anza Trail
The waterfront area along Bay Point is mostly undeveloped, but in 2020, the 150-acre Bay Point Regional Shoreline area was improved to increase public accessibility to the marshes. It is open for fishing, hiking and birdwatching. In the center of town, the 15-mile Delta de Anza Trail runs through Bay Point, connecting it to Concord, Pittsburg and Oakley. The paved path is suitable for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Several community parks have playgrounds and green spaces, including California Seasons Park, Anuta Park and De Anza Park. Lynbrook Park has upgraded playground equipment, a half basketball court, and open fields. Nearby, Pittsburg holds events and offers water activities at the marina. Plus, it has trails for hiking at Lime Ridge Open Space and Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.
