Less than 15 miles northeast of Downtown Des Moines is the small city of Bondurant, an area known for its prime suburban location and charming local atmosphere. “Bondurant still has that small-town feel to it, and it’s very attractive to people looking to be close to the action of Des Moines but want a quieter place to call home,” says Lacie Sibley, a real estate agent with Iowa Realty who has eight years of realty experience in the area. Sibley also notes that the town itself is highly walkable and residents have convenient access to a number of restaurants and retail stores. This community is zoned for the local Bondurant-Farrar Community School District, which serves students from kindergarten to 12th grade and receives an overall B rating from Niche.

New residential developments for a growing population
Residential areas of the city are dominated by single-family homes situated in planned housing developments, many of which were constructed in the past decade as the city’s population increased. Ranch-style homes and split levels are common in the community and often feature stone foundations, vinyl exteriors, paved driveways, and attached garages. Home prices tend to range between $225,000 and $450,000, with the median build year being 2010. In some residential communities like Harvest Meadows, locals can find four-bedroom homes built in 2012 that can cost approximately $370,000.

More students mean more schools
To accommodate a growing student population, the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District and city officials decided to split the Bondurant-Farrar Middle School into an intermediate institution and junior high school. The middle school building was renamed Bondurant-Farrar Intermediate and now serves students in fifth and sixth grade. Students in grades seven and eight can now go to the newly built Bondurant-Farrar Junior High, which opened in 2022. Younger learners might go to primary school at Morris Elementary, which has a B rating, or the B-minus-rated Anderson Elementary. Secondary school students in grades nine through 12 can attend Bondurant-Farrar High School, which also has a B-minus rating.

Take a stroll around Lake Petocka
In addition to Bondurant City Park, the city is home to a number of small local parks with lots to offer. “Wolf Creek Park, Lincoln Estates Park, Efnor Estates Park and Wisteria Heights Park – all of them have children’s play equipment, and several have shelter houses, which are perfect for picnics,” Sibley says. She adds that another popular outdoor recreation spot is Lake Petocka, where residents can find a dog park, go fishing, and walk along a trail circling the lake. Just northeast of the lake is the Bondurant Recreational Sports Complex, which features multiple baseball and soccer fields. “Many of these outdoor spaces are accessible from the Chichaqua Valley Trail that extends more than 30 miles and travels to Des Moines and beyond,” says Angela McKenzie, a real estate agent with RE/MAX and Bondurant local.

Walk to local city shops and restaurants
The city’s walkability makes it easier for locals to find plenty of shopping and dining options. Sibley lays out what a day spent exploring Bondurant’s stores might look like: “Residents can head to the local Brick Street Market for groceries, enjoy lunch at the Reclaimed Rails Brewing Company, grab dessert at Home Slice Handmade Pies, do some shopping at the Little House on Main boutique, and then make it home in time to throw dinner together and spend the evening on the porch with neighbors.” Locals can also check out Somewhere In The Middle Coffee Shop, known for its flavored drink menu, and head next door to Founders Irish Pub, which serves traditional Irish dishes in a laid-back bar setting.

Year-round events and the Bondurant Farmer's Market
According to McKenzie, the city of Bondurant hosts a number of community events throughout the year. “Some of our favorites include Summerfest, the Youth Fishing Derby, Business Safe Trick or Treat, and all the various Christmas activities,” she says. During the annual Summerfest, residents can enjoy two days of celebration with parades, auctions, amusement rides and tractor pulls. “The Bondurant Summer and Fall Farmer’s Market is another community favorite featuring local vendors, food trucks and family fun every Wednesday during the farmer’s market season,” Sibley says.
DART bus routes connect to downtown
As a government member of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority, the city of Bondurant operates two DART bus routes that provide public transportation for residents and connect them to Downtown Des Moines and the nearby cities of Ankeny and Altoona. Less than a 6-mile drive west is the Ankeny Regional Airport, which offers options for executive travel, shipping operations and general aviation.
