Rural oasis with exciting destinations nearby
When asked why people move to Erie County’s Boston, Zach Harrington, a Realtor who lives in the neighborhood, says, “Maybe it's just being away from it all. It’s rural but not way out there. There’s a little bit of everything here, and we’re close to what we don’t have.” True to these words, Boston locals are under 10 miles from Hamburg and Orchard Park and 25 miles from Downtown Buffalo — all frequented for their retail and cultural highlights. As Boston is a part of the “Southtowns” of Erie, it's also part of the snowbelt or ski country.
Farmhouses sit surrounded by woods
As Boston’s homes are dispersed among wooded hills and cleared valleys, lot sizes vary. One house might rest on 10 acres, while next door, a subdivision settles with smaller lots and a lively street filled with kids. Architecture is also dynamic. "We have early 20th century farmhouses, newer subdivisions built within the past 20 to 30 years and random custom-built homes," Harrington says. A six-bedroom property on 2 acres might go for around 270,000 in Boston and a four-bedroom nestled within hills for around $340,000. Plots range between $70,000 and $150,000. Properties typically sell within 28 days, 10 days faster than the national average.

Getting a fresh sandwich from Boston Deli
Boston Deli has been serving up fresh sandwiches and pickles for decades. New Boston Hotel, a local restaurant bar, makes their own chips and stays open until midnight. Three Girls Café is a neighborhood favorite for breakfast. It’s also near Steve’s Barber Shop. For a wider selection, Harrington recommends Hamburg. “It's only 15 minutes away and offers excellent restaurants and grocery stores like Aldi and Wegmans." Hamburg’s village is also a retail hub, filled with businesses from Rite Aid to locally owned spots like Southtown Salt Cave.

Celebrating fall at Red Barrel Cider Mills
Boston locals gather around annual, seasonal and weekly events. Red Barrel Cider Mills opens for business each fall and serves more than just cider, including homemade maple candies, donuts and pumpkin pie. The Boston Town Band holds an annual Christmas show at Boston Valley Elementary, with punch and cookies served afterward. And the Boston Free Library hosts weekly enrichment activities, from ukulele classes for adults to preschool story time and creative writing classes.

Taking Interstate 219 to downtown
As Boston is very spacious and rural, neighbors rely on their cars. There are also no public bus lines running through the area and no subway or light rail to speak of. Interstate 219 bisects the neighborhood, and the nearest airport is Buffalo Niagara International, 27 miles along this interstate’s passage. Living in Boston offers residents a well-connected rural life.
A little history of Boston
While Boston is not historical in terms of tourism, it has deep roots demonstrated by markers dotting the area. One is devoted to an 1843 typhoid outbreak that killed 10 people. Another to the Iroquois people who once inhabited the land. And another to Charles Johnson, the first settler of Boston. The neighborhood’s Maplewood Cemetary rests on Johnson's original property and he is buried there along with other settlers.
