Secluded mountain community with hiking opportunities
Winding throughout the Fourmile Creek Valley, Crisman is a remote neighborhood of dirt roads dotted with custom homes and outdoor recreation. “Folks that live up there want to live off the grid and have that mountain lifestyle,” says Matthew Tomlan, a broker associate with Milehimodern who has sold in the neighborhood. “You don’t really have neighbors, and there’s elbow room to move around.” Homes are separated by acres of private land that contribute to the area’s seclusion. Several hiking trails are accessible in the neighborhood, which wind up into the surrounding mountains.

Trails and natural views
Crisman’s location between Sugarloaf Mountain and Bighorn Mountain presents many opportunities to get outdoors. The Four Mile Trail is a loop through the forest for hiking and mountain biking. There are also multiple natural areas, such as Packer Gulch, Sweet Home Gulch and Arkansas Gulch that are accessible along the trails. Bald Mountain has a scenery area along Sunshine Canyon Drive that’s just outside Crisman. A short walk along the Pines to Peaks loop will take visitors to an area with panoramic views of the grassy plains and surrounding mountains. Fourmile Creek flows through the valley with activities on the water, like kayaking and tubing.

Homes in Crisman are spread out along the dirt roads, giving properties plenty of space between each other. Contemporary multi-level mountain homes make up most of the housing types. Some have modern features such as stone accents and front gables, while others resemble rustic cabins with large picture windows. These properties range from 2,500 to 3,500 square feet and can cost between $850,000 and $1.4 million. “The homes are all super different and have their own unique features,” Tomlan says. “People will buy empty lots and build whatever they want to build on the land.”

Boulder Canyon Drive is the main thoroughfare in and out of Crisman to Boulder.
The country roads in Crisman
The roads in Crisman are primarily dirt paths that branch off from Four Mile Canyon Drive, the main thoroughfare that connects to Boulder Canyon Drive leading into the city. “You have to drive up these switchback roads to get to your property,” Tomlan says. Since Crisman is located along a valley between two mountains, there’s an emergency escape route that winds through the area – though it’s closed in the winter. While the neighborhood itself is car-dependent, there is one RTD bus route called “Gold Hill Climb” that has a stop at Crisman’s entrance on Logan Mile Road.
The Fourmile Fire Protection District is only 2 miles from the neighborhood for an emergency.
Potential risks of mountain living
With Crisman’s natural valley landscape, the neighborhood may be susceptible to environmental challenges. Fourmile Creek puts the area at a potential risk for flooding. Throughout Crisman’s history, there have only been two floods that have caused property damage, which is why there are flood risk reduction initiatives in place, such as levees and floodwalls. Additionally, the surrounding forestry and vegetation may also put Crisman at a potential risk of wildfire. The Fourmile Fire Protection District is only 2 miles from the neighborhood in case of an emergency.
