A large multicultural community within commuting distance of NYC

Bensonhurst is home to a large multi-ethnic community, including one of Brooklyn’s biggest Chinatowns. “You have every type of nationality here. The only place that has more nationalities is Queens,” says Luke Constantino, a senior associate with Momentum Real Estate who grew up in Bensonhurst. Bensonhurst also benefits from two retail corridors, proximity to the shoreline and several trains. Some blocks can feel almost suburban with small yards and driveways, attracting families who want more space for the money. “This is an area where you can watch it grow and become part of the population, adds Constantino. “We're not over-saturated yet.”

Multifamily homes and boutique condos are common

Densely packed multifamily homes rub shoulders with boutique condos, but most buildings are low to midrise – allowing for plenty of natural light. Red brick rowhomes are a common sight, as are mother-daughter homes. Condos are another norm, and the neighborhood has experienced a condo boom that isn’t slowing down, especially around Bay Ridge Parkway and Bay Parkway. The housing average is $1.3 million. Prices start around $450,000 for a new one-bedroom condo and jump up to a minimum of $1 million for a single-family home with a shared driveway. Detached homes and tiny yards add to the price.

Culturally diverse food options and two shopping areas

18th and 86th streets are the two main shopping corridors, containing one of Brooklyn’s largest Chinatowns. 86th Street stretches underneath the elevated D train, a busy mix of chains and independent businesses. The vibrant food scene is extensive and encompasses Golden Bay for dim sum and old-school Villabate Alba Bakery for Italian pastries. Jmart is a supermarket chain selling both Asian and Western food in a 30,000-square-foot space. NetCost Market is a local chain specializing in Russian and kosher foods, while nearby Key Food is a common city chain.

An annual Italian feast draws thousands

The Feast of Santa Rosalia is annual neighborhood tradition going back at least 50 years, and celebrates the patron saint of Palermo, Sicily. The 11-day street fair takes over 18th Street every summer, attracting thousands with live music, carnival games, and street food vendors.

Midtown commute takes about an hour

Bensonhurst benefits from the N, D, and M lines stopping at numerous stations, providing good neighborhood access. The area I live specifically is not too crowded like other places, not rowdy nor is there any danger in the neighborhood, there is a police station nearby. It's a quiet and calm area and there is public transportation nearby like a two minute walk.

From the area that I lived and went to in Bensonhurst, it was not the greatest or the worst experience. Renting apartment wise, the rent is expensive for low-income families. Grocery-wise, I was close to 4 Asian supermarkets and 1 Italian market which is convenient for fresh produce. Safety-wise, there were times I felt like I was uncomfortable. Bensonhurst is an overall nice place to live in.

Bensonhurst a lovely community that is diverse and friendly. The area is peaceful and quiet, there are stores that are very convenient and there are many options of buses within walking distance. The only thing I would change it more street light in certain areas, sometime its a bit to dark walking home late at night.
