A large multicultural community within commuting distance of NYC

Bensonhurst is a diverse, residential neighborhood in southwest Brooklyn known for its strong multicultural community feel, Asian culture hotspots and family-friendly atmosphere. Long popular with multigenerational residents, Bensonhurst offers a quieter pace than trendier areas while still providing excellent public transportation, local shopping and acclaimed food. The neighborhood is especially appealing to families, first-time homebuyers and renters looking for more space and stability. With convenient subway access and proximity to Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Sunset Park, Bensonhurst combines everyday livability with classic Brooklyn character.

Multifamily homes and boutique condos are common

Housing in Bensonhurst mirrors the neighborhood’s quiet, family-oriented and practical feel, offering more space and value than nearby areas like Sunset Park while remaining more affordable than Bay Ridge or Dyker Heights. Densely packed multifamily homes sit alongside boutique condos, but most buildings are low- to mid-rise, allowing for natural light and a distinctly residential atmosphere. Red brick rowhomes are common, reflecting the area’s multigenerational roots, while an ongoing condo boom has attracted first time buyers and downsizers. The average home price hovers around $1.3 million, with new one-bedroom condos starting in the mid-$400,000s and single-family homes beginning around $1 million. Prices rise from there for detached houses, many of which have shared driveways or small private yards. Overall, Bensonhurst real estate appeals to buyers and renters seeking a stable, safe and community-driven Brooklyn neighborhood with long-term livability rather than flash. “This is an area where you can watch it grow and become part of the population,” says Luke Constantino , a senior associate with Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate who grew up in Bensonhurst. “We're not over-saturated yet.”

Culturally diverse food options and two shopping areas

Bensonhurst’s dining and shopping scene centers on the bustling 18th and 86th streets, home to one of Brooklyn’s largest Chinatowns. Along 86th Street, beneath the elevated D train, you’ll find a lively blend of chain retailers and unique independent businesses, reflecting the neighborhood’s rich diversity and vibrant atmosphere. “Famous 86th street is the absolute most convenient to everything: trains, banks, houses of worship and the famous shopping promenade,” says broker Olga Moldavsky of Re/Max, a longtime Brooklyn resident. “There are open street markets and the best bargain seafood markets in town; all those stores offer you so many options for food.” The extensive food scene encompasses:

  • Chinese and Cantonese plates at emblematic Bensonhurst stalwarts such as 86 Wong, New Ruan’s Restaurant and Golden Bay
  • Traditional Polish comfort foods like pierogi, stuffed cabbage and schnitzel at Chris’s Restaurant
  • Old-school Italian cooking and baking at favorites like Tommaso and Villabate Alba Bakery
Bensonhurst also offers a variety of grocery shopping options to match its multicultural community. Jmart is a large supermarket featuring a broad selection of both Asian and Western groceries in its spacious 30,000-square-foot store. For those seeking Russian and kosher specialties, NetCost Market is a popular local chain catering to diverse tastes. Additionally, Key Food provides a familiar city supermarket experience for everyday essentials.

Kind of a split neighborhood, with apartments and houses clearly in different locations. There are not a lot of job opportunities because it is mostly quiet residential, but in the areas with the houses, it couldn't be safer. The schools are really good, but there isn't a lot of food options.

Lovely neighborhood, with newly renovated medical center nearby and local restaurants. Train stations and buses are very close with one another for easy transfers,

It used to be a very good neighborhood but its been going down recently. There has been more crimes reported than ever before. There are people vaping everywhere down the block and there been people breaking into people's house and car around my block. But if I compare it to another neighborhood in Brooklyn, its much safer.

Very Nice neighborhood, extremely diverse but also quiet and respectful. There are tons of access to good food, banks and local pharmacies near by. There are trains and buses always close by in case you need to head uptown or downtown.
