Scenic views and nature trails in Appletree Point
"All of Appletree Point is very close to the Burlington Greenway, our 8-mile multi-use recreation path, which runs the length of the city and is part of the larger Island Line Rail Trail, connecting north through Colchester all the way to the Champlain Islands," says Max Madalinski, the Parks Project Coordinator for Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront. "Our department owns and manages Appletree Park, which has some recently renovated tennis courts, a playground, basketball courts, and a ball field." Residents should be aware that, due to a high groundwater table, the soil at Appletree Park can be very wet. To the north of town, Starr Farm Park borders the bay and features wooded trails, a dog park, a playground, and sports fields. Next to the dog park is a vast community garden nestled behind picturesque red barns and horse corrals. For a day by the water, Leddy Beach has a sandy shore, barbecue grills and sports fields. Right at the park is the Gordon H. Paquette Ice Arena for indoor skating or hockey games.Cozy townhouses, forested family homes and waterfront estates
Potential homebuyers in Appletree Point may first notice the peaceful, lazy streets surrounded by trees and a short walk from most front doors to Appletree Bay. Large Colonial-inspired or New England-style family homes often back up to a thick line of trees. Though the peninsula is considered small, single-family properties benefit from front porch patios, wide driveways and spacious backyards. Those looking to buy one of these larger dwellings may find them at prices between $550,000 and $900,000. For something a little smaller, cozy townhouses in the Cumberland community may have attached single-car garages, private patios and plenty of storage space, often costing between $450,000 and over $575,000. Homes on the water are priced higher for their views of the bay, spacious lawns and sometimes ladder access to the water. Waterfront properties on Appletree Bay can cost between $975,000 and over $2 million, while a select few on Starr Farm Beach Road may cost a bit lower, between $500,000 and $650,000.Burlington City Nature Celebration and Leddy Park’s Beach Bites
Living in the Burlington area often means gathering with family, friends and neighbors to celebrate nature and get outside. In April, the Greater Burlington City Nature Celebration hosts several events, an educational speaker series and a "bioblitz" nature challenge, in which students and residents race to document local wildlife and plant diversity. On Independence Day weekend, everyone gathers at Burlington Waterfront Park, about 5 miles south, to watch the fireworks display. On Wednesdays from July to August, Leddy Park hosts its Leddy Park Beach Bites, which include local food truck vendors, free concerts, and sunset views at the beach.North Avenue’s shops and restaurants
Appletree Point residents can run most of their errands without traveling too far away from home. The area's small shopping center on North Avenue includes the Hannaford grocery store, Snap Fitness gym, Ace Hardware and a United States Postal Service post office. For a taste of biryani or tandoori chicken, Delight Restaurant and Bar is a popular takeout spot serving authentic Indian cuisine. Bagel Café & Deli across the street is a one-stop shop for bagels, coffee, sandwiches and even ice cream. Up the road, Volcano Asian Cuisine and Pingala Cafe and Eatery share space in a little building bordering Woodbury Road. Whether sampling Volcano's sushi and egg rolls or indulging in one of Pingala Cafe's flavorful vegan dishes, there is always a little something for everyone in Appletree Point.Innovative Burlington School District schools and programs
Appletree Point falls within the Burlington School District, rated an overall B on Niche, and the No. 13 best school district in Vermont. For kindergarten through fifth grade, students may begin at C.P. Smith Elementary School, which is graded a B. Lyman C. Hunt Middle School, rated a B-minus, has a wide range of after-school clubs and activities including music, dance and STEAM programs. Burlington High School is graded a B-plus and is rated the No. 9 best high school in Vermont on Niche. In 2020, the high school campus was condemned due to toxic chemicals, so the school was transferred to the former Macy's department store downtown. The store was converted into a unique and exciting experience for many students, who would now take escalators upstairs to their classrooms and eat at the Michael Kors Cafe by the former makeup counter. Students will remain at Macy's until the issues at the original campus are resolved.Commutes into Burlington, the airport and the University of Vermont
When heading to the heart of Burlington, locals can take one of the several Green Mountain Transit buses that circulate on North Avenue. Though the commute time is about an hour, it's a straight shot to the city, which is about 5 miles south. Drivers can reach the city in less than 20 minutes when there is low traffic on the same route. On the city's eastern side is the University of Vermont, which is also home to the University of Vermont Medical Center. For weekends away, Burlington International Airport is about 8 miles away and can be reached via Riverside Avenue in about 25 minutes.
Solar powered innovations in Appletree Point
Appletree Point shares space with a large solar panel field off Sunset Cliff Road. Originally proposed in 2014 by the Burlington Electric Department, the solar field is about 20 acres large. Though some were initially worried about the size of the project, the area now benefits from the field's ability to power hundreds of homes with clean, renewable energy.
