Many of the houses here were built in the 1960s and '70s, with ranch-style and contemporary homes and estates making up most of the mix, though some modern architecture and new construction can be found. Prices range from $254,000 to $2.8 million. Most homes have garages and lot sizes can go up to ½ acre, suitable for a garden or kids' play area. Annual Halloween fun

A family-favorite event is Barclay Downs' annual Halloween parade. The costumed march finishes with a celebration at the organizer's home, which is decorated as a haunted house for the evening. That job has been passed down over the decades, with the current host performing that duty for more than a decade after taking over from the previous organizer's 12-year run. "It's just a chain of people keeping those traditions alive," McGrath says.

Only 4 miles to uptown Charlottte

Most residents drive to work, but Charlotte's Area Transport (CAT) bus stations are also available. To get to Charlotte's Center City, residents can drive five miles via back roads. Charlotte Douglas International is a 10-mile drive via Billy Graham Parkway.
