The Union Miles Development Corporation, or UMDC, is on a mission to “improve the quality of life within the Union Miles and Mt. Pleasant service areas through community engagement, housing, and economic development,” according to their website. They offer various programs and services, ranging from a Summer Festival for the youth to household assistance services for seniors. One of their most prolific events is the annual Youth Exposure Trip, where the area youth can experience a place outside of Cleveland. They even offer services to owners, like educational workshops for obtaining vacant lots that border their homes. The Cleveland Public Library Union Branch was established in 1869 and has been a community cornerstone for decades. It offers workshops and programs for residents of all ages, including crafts and book clubs. It’s also an Adaptive Technology Station, meaning it serves visitors who are visually and physically impaired.Affordable homes and ample investment opportunities
Two- and three-story Colonials, workers’ cottages and bungalows tightly line these streets, many with detached garages closer to the backyard accessible through private driveways. These paved driveways often separate these homes from one another, with lawns and gardens limited to rectangular backyards. Two-family houses are common here, with dual front entry doors or side doors and a second porch situated above the first. “In the last 10 years, it’s been a good area for investments because of the accessibility,” says Elliot Stone, Realtor with Century 21 HomeStar. Home prices are often below $100,000, making Union-Miles Park a haven for investors looking to lease out their properties – 52% of homes in this neighborhood are occupied by renters. For those who may not have the immediate funds for a down payment and closing costs, UMDC has a lease-to-purchase program. The program allows buyers to lease affordable single-family homes for a period of time before they are presented with the option of purchasing. Miles Park sits in the median of Miles Park Avenue, where an archway entrance heralds it as part of the Union Miles Historic District. Grass flanks a paved walking path that leads to a small playground set. A smaller space on the southern end, Dove Playground includes basketball courts, swings and an open ballfield. The Earle B. Turner Recreation Center has a gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. Mill Creek Falls is just south of this neighborhood. Students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade can attend Miles School, whose motto is "Dream BIG, Work HARD.” It has a C-minus rating on Niche. Nathan Hale is another school in Union-Miles Park, where the focus is on literacy and family involvement. In the 2020-2021 school year it was awarded the National Healthy Schools Bronze Award thanks to its nutrition, physical activity and wellness policies. Nathan Hale also has a C-minus rating. Garfield Heights High School is just south of the neighborhood and has a C rating.Shopping and dining on Kinsman
Union-Miles is primarily residential and industrial, but there are restaurants and shops on Kinsman Road, which borders this neighborhood to the north. Aldi is the go-to grocery store, while just east of the community, Mt Pleasant Bar-B-Q has been a community mainstay for over 50 years. Specializing in Polish Boy sandwiches and ribs, it has been a go-to take-out joint for residents spanning generations.I-480, Green and Blue lines and bus routes
Interstate 480 runs east and west and is just south of Miles-Union Park. It intersects with Willow Freeway, which runs north and south, at an interchange to the west. Realtor Leilani Bowersock with Coldwell Banker says, "this convenient location is just minutes from other neighboring community amenities, and it's only 10 minutes from downtown Cleveland." Cleveland International Airport is 17 miles west. Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, a nonprofit academic medical center, is just 5 miles north. It's one of the biggest medical employers in the city and offers emergency and specialty care.Elevated crime and noise levels
Union-Miles has an elevated crime index score, receiving a 6 out of 10. The US average is 4. Several rail tracks which run through the community and the neighboring industrial areas, with the potential for noise pollution and traffic back-up.
