Riverbend
Sliding down Big Run’s Derby Hill
Big Run Park is one of the largest in the Columbus Metro Parks system, dividing Riverbend nearly in two. Kids can frolic at the playground and then gather for a picnic lunch with the family. There's also a trailhead connected to a breezy 3-1/2-mile loop. Realtor Thomas Hamrick of Keller William Consultants Realty has sold a lot in the area and shares that Big Run Athletic Complex stands out as a park feature. "Not every park has something like that, like an indoor arena," he says. "They do a lot of pickleball, soccer, tennis and volleyball tournaments." It's a multipurpose space always brimming with energy. The park also hosts a long-standing tradition: the Columbus Soap Box Derby. Since 1967, the race has occurred at Big Run's Derby Hill. It's a 1000-foot track — one of the country's few non-roadway courses for gravity drag racing. Participants' cars can go up to 30 miles an hour while navigating the course. When there's no Soap Box Derby, the hill is open for bicyclists year-round and sledding in the wintertime.Grabbing a bite along Georgesville
Walmart Supercenter is right inside the neighborhood for everyday basics. Across Interstate 270 in Georgesville Square, Kroger is another option for fresh produce, and Lowe's Home Improvement is a house flipper's best friend. Chain restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings, Steak' n Shake and Eat Greek Express offer a quick bite between errands. Moving north along Georgesville Road leads to more dining options. Emelio's is a family owned joint that's been serving oven-fired pizzas for over 60 years. Kyber brings international flavors to the table with its traditional Indian cuisine. For a sugary snack, Amy's Donuts draws in flocks of people with its technicolor decor and imaginative toppings. Continuing north leads to Columbus' only Vegas-style casino. Hollywood Casino opened in 2012 and offers several games, dining options and live music every week on its sunset patio. For something more family friendly, Rollhouse Columbus is open seven days a week for an afternoon of bowling.Heading downtown via interstate or two-lane road
Riverbend can feel far from Columbus proper, but Hamrick says, "It's inside 270, so it's definitely Columbus." Interstate 270 hugs the neighborhood's western border, and onramps heading either direction are accessible. Public transit options are available along Georgesville Road, Clime Road and U.S. State Route 62, just outside the area's boundaries. Demorest Road is also a major thoroughfare, as it crosses through the neighborhood's center and connects to Sullivant Avenue — a 7-mile drive into Downtown Columbus. Residents traveling out of state can head toward Rickenbacker International Airport 16 miles away or John Glenn Columbus International Airport 13 miles east. Along Clime Road is Big Run Health Center, which provides urgent and primary care services.Well-priced housing split by Big Run Park
Split-levels, ranches and New Traditionals line the quiet streets of the neighborhood. Homes range in price from $190,000 to $330,000. "Homes in Riverbend are a little more affordable," says Yuriy Boot, a Realtor with Red 1 Realty who's sold in the area. "That's because subdivisions with newer builds have popped up in areas around Riverbend, keeping the prices low." Prices are also highly dependent on the age and renovation level of homes. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s are in the east, while homes built in the last 20 years are in the west. However, the overall low prices make this area desirable to investors, renters and first-time homebuyers. "My clients who buy over there are all pretty much first-time homebuyers," Hamrick says. Westside homes come with large grassy lawns and two-car garages. On the east side, smaller front yards, narrow sidewalks and cars parked in driveways or carports are more common sights.Elementary students follow Boyer’s Basic School Concept
The neighborhood is in the South-Western City School District, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. West Franklin Elementary School follows Ernest L. Boyer's Basic School Concept, which hinges on honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, self-discipline, perseverance and giving. The school earns a C-plus on Niche and serves kindergarten through fourth grade. Franklin Woods Intermediate School serves grades five and six, while Finland Middle School has seventh- and eighth-grade students. Both schools receive a C rating. Franklin Heights High School receives an overall B-minus score on Niche and welcomes its freshmen with a crew of Link Leaders — juniors and seniors who dedicate time toward supporting and mentoring incoming students.
