About 9 miles east of Downtown Columbus, Shady Lane is primarily made up of single-family homes from the mid-century. Multiple public schools populate the neighborhood, and children can walk to them. A 136-acre green space with various athletic amenities cuts through the center of Shady Lane. Restaurants line Shady Lane’s borders, and Columbus’ most traveled thoroughfare, Interstate 270, lies on the neighborhood’s east side. “This is a good neighborhood for first-time homebuyers and those who want to start a family,” says Byron Diaz, a Realtor with Nexthome Experience. “You also see that people who move in want to stay for a long time, too.”

Ranch-style homes from the 1950s and 60s
The neighborhood consists of windy suburban streets lined with single-family homes and sidewalks. The oak-shaded backyards often have patios with grills. Almost all of the neighborhood’s houses are ranch styles with attached garages. They were developed during the 1950s and 60s and are valued from $180,000 to $300,000. Most have wood exteriors, but many are made of brick. “The homes in Shady Lane have amazing construction,” Diaz says. “The quality of work in building the homes was top-notch.”

Public schools within walking distance
Children can walk to Shady Lane Elementary, Sherwood Middle and Walnut Ridge High School, all west of Big Walnut Park. All three schools have C-minus Niche ratings and are located within the neighborhood. The high school has accreditation from the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges and the Department of Education in the State of Ohio. East of Big Walnut Park, Woodcrest Elementary has a C-minus Niche rating and Yorktown Middle has a D-plus Niche rating. Both schools are within walking distance of most residents.

Big Walnut Park and Shady Lane Park
The 136-acre Big Walnut Park divides the neighborhood down the middle. Big Walnut Creek flows vertically along its eastern border. Many residents walk to the park to use the baseball diamonds, basketball courts, pickleball overlays and tennis courts. Folks take their canine friends to the dog park while children enjoy the playground. The park also has access to the paved Greenway Trail, which winds along the creek and allows access to a 230-mile trail network that sprawls across the city. Visitors cast lines in the lake that is stocked with fish. Also within the neighborhood, Shady Lane Park provides about 5 acres of green space for people to jog, practice yoga or hold picnics.

Diverse dining on the neighborhood’s northern and western borders
Dining options line South Hamilton Road on the neighborhood’s west end and East Main Street on the neighborhood’s north end. The establishments are within walking distance of most residents. Zara Mediterranean Charcoal Grill, on the west end, serves Greek dishes cooked over smoldering coals. On the north end, Ibex Ethiopian Bar & Restaurant serves both meat-based and vegan dishes and shows sporting events on its televisions. Just down the street, Flavor 91 Bistro is a classic bar environment specializing in burgers from 100% grass-fed beef. Also on East Main Street, Hi Level Fashion sells casual streetwear and sneakers. A Kroger is less than half a mile north of the neighborhood on South Hamilton Road.

An AMC theater and Ohio Stadium
Columbus offers a plethora of entertainment options, both large and small. An AMC dine-in theater is less than 12 miles north of the neighborhood. Parents sometimes schedule their children’s birthday parties at Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, less than 3 miles from the neighborhood. About 4 miles to the neighborhood’s southeast, the Magic Mountain Fun Center has a go-kart track, batting cages, a mini golf course and an arcade. Fans of Ohio State football travel less than 15 miles to root for the NCAA Division I championship-winning team at Ohio Stadium.
