A green, suburban feel with easy access to shops and schools

With plenty of restaurants, shopping spots and schools close by, Shady Lane is known as a convenient, one-stop kind of community. The neighborhood wraps around a 130-acre park and a lazy creek, giving this eastside Columbus area lots of green space to match its cozy feel. You’ll mostly find smaller midcentury homes here, and the lower housing prices compared to surrounding neighborhoods make Shady Lane a favorite for first-time buyers and young families getting started.

More affordable midcentury homes than many nearby neighborhoods

Shady Lane really lives up to its name, with big mature trees arching over the neighborhood’s winding streets. Sidewalks are pretty scarce, but since traffic stays light, it’s still reasonably walkable. Most of the houses are 1950s and ’60s split-levels or ranch-style homes. According to Corey LaVeris, an associate with Re/Max Affiliates, a lot of these places have gotten updates in recent years. “Investors have come in, made some repairs and put a little money into them,” he says. “Then they have a nice remodeled product for a new home buyer.” Single-family homes in Shady Lane usually land in the low $200,000s—similar to nearby neighborhoods like Leawood and Pine Hills, and noticeably more affordable than areas like The Fairway, Greenbrier Farm, Olde Orchard and Walnut Hills. “There’s a good opportunity for affordability,” LaVeris says. “They don’t have to compete with a lot of the bigger, new construction.” High-speed internet isn’t hard to come by either, with several providers offering solid connectivity.

Local schools include walkable options and a top‑rated charter

Students in this area are part of Columbus City Schools, the biggest district in Ohio. Shady Lane Elementary and Sherwood Middle sit right inside the neighborhood, and Walnut Ridge High School is just a short walk south, so plenty of kids can actually walk to school. Patriot Preparatory Academy, a highly rated charter school, is also in Shady Lane, and Niche ranks it among the top public kindergarten through 12th-grade schools in the state. For families looking beyond their assigned schools, Columbus City Schools offers a district-wide lottery that lets them try for magnet or alternative programs, with placements depending on space and a random draw.

Big Walnut Park offers trails, courts and creekside green space

Dividing the neighborhood in half is Shady Lane’s centerpiece: the 136-acre Big Walnut Park. Flowing down the park’s eastern border, Big Walnut Creek adds a peaceful touch to the busy mix of sports courts and open space. Locals drop by to hit the basketball courts, walk their dogs or let kids burn off energy at the playground. Access to the paved, 230-mile Greenway Trail gives them even more room to stretch their legs. The stocked pond is a favorite for casual fishing. At about 5 acres, Shady Lane Park has a laid-back vibe, with plenty of space for leisurely walks, picnics or small community events.

Where locals go for global cuisine and small‑batch hard cider

Several locally owned restaurants line the streets that border Shady Lane, giving locals plenty of options for eating out:

  • Los Guachos serves Tex-Mex classics in a colorful atmosphere.
  • Chez Rama specializes in laid-back but authentic Senegalese food.
  • Lalibela Restaurant and Bar offers traditional Ethiopian and East African flavors.
  • Hellbranch brews its own hard cider with seasonal offerings and the occasional food truck.
  • M&M Chicken & Fish is a no-frills local favorite where you can get wings, fried fish and gyros.

Grocery stores and retailers sit just north with more options nearby

With plenty of shopping options just a mile or two away, running errands is pretty simple. You’ll find a Kroger, furniture stores, and other retailers to the north, while fast-food spots cluster around South Hamilton Road and Main Street. According to LaVeris, most residents still head toward Reynoldsburg to shop, but there’s no shortage of other choices. “You can head west and be closer to the city and all downtown has to offer, or head a little east and try more of that suburban shopping.”

Reynoldsburg is less than 5 miles away, while New Albany is just over 10 miles north. The Central Ohio Transit Authority’s bus service runs through Shady Lane, with stops on East Livingston Avenue and South Hamilton Road.
