Relative affordability in the East Bay
Glenbrook Heights is filled with ranch style homes, most of which date back to the 1950s and 60s. The streets are lined with sidewalks, landscaped yards and plenty of mature trees and California flora. Lot sizes are modest, typically coming in around 8,000 square feet. Some homes have been upgraded, while others may need some work. “There have been some really great rehabs out there and other homes have been left standing in time,” Cherne says. Single-family homes range from $500,000 to $750,000, putting it slightly lower than the city’s median, though prices have risen 13% in the past year. “When it comes to prices, it’s a good entry point into the East Bay housing market,” Cherne says.Walk to community parks, trails and public squares
John F. Baldwin Park, which sits just outside the neighborhood, is a community gathering place with bocce courts, a dog park, athletic fields and playgrounds. The Concord Senior Center is located on the premises as well. The park is also an access point to the BART Linear Park, a 2.5-mile walking, biking and jogging path that borders the train tracks. It runs alongside the Port of Chicago Highway all the way to the North Concord/Martinez BART station. Todos Santos Plaza, which is south of Glenbrook Heights, is a public square planted at the heart of Downtown Concord where concerts, markets and festivals are held throughout the year.Local schools close to home
Young students can start their education at Sun Terrace Elementary, a C-rated public magnet school that specializes in science, technology, engineering and math. The next step is El Dorado Middle School, which also earns a C rating. Mt. Diablo High School is within the neighborhood, making for an easy walk for the students who live there. The high school gets a C-plus rating from Niche and offers supportive services such as an onsite food pantry. Those looking for an alternative to public school might consider Queen of All Saints Elementary, a private elementary school that is close to the high school.John Muir Health
John Muir Health Concord Medical Center is within the neighborhood. It’s a major local medical center that employs thousands of people, draws thousands of visitors and patients and has been ranked among the best hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area by U.S. News and World Report.Getting around the East Bay by car and rail
Glenbrook Heights is bordered at its western edge by State Route 242, a regional commuter corridor that connects with Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek and Interstate 680. It’s about 22 miles to Oakland and 30 miles to Downtown San Francisco. Those who prefer to travel by rail will find the North Concord BART station only 2 miles away. The BART train offers dozens of stops from San Francisco to North San Jose. Walking and biking are also an option for local travel.Shopping and dining in Concord’s downtown district
Downtown Concord encompasses several walkable city blocks lined with local businesses, eateries, cafes and shops. Dining options are diverse, with Indian, Mexican, Asian and Italian restaurants occupying storefronts surrounding Todos Santos Plaza. The district is also home to Brenden Theatres where residents can catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster. A shopping plaza on Willow Pass Road has specialty grocery stores like 99 Ranch Market, which offers Asian staples, and Las Montañas Supermarket, which features Latin American goods.
