At the base of the San Gabriel mountains is Charter Oak, a Los Angeles bedroom community that grew into itself after World War II. Legend has it that a Spanish nobleman named Don Antonio, who fled Los Angeles after some difficulty with the law, hid in a large, leafy oak tree when American militiamen attacked him and his fellow campers during his escape. While he was hiding, Antonio overheard the captain below him say, “Verily this oak tree is like the Charter Oak,” referring to a historical white oak tree in Connecticut. That’s how the neighborhood got its name.
