An established Eugene community with an big outdoorsy scene
Bounded by the Willamette River to its east and the Northwest Expressway to its west, River Road highlights Northwest Eugene’s convenient location and scenic outdoors. “Locals care about their neighborhood here,” says Realtor Tom Richards of Tom Richards Real Estate. Richards has sold homes in the area for over 30 years and is an area native. “It’s a very community-oriented area. Neighbors go to the park with one another, go to local markets or head to downtown Eugene for a concert. Many people spend their time outside; there’s a big outdoorsy scene here.”

Willamette recreation and the turtle preserve
The River Road area hugs the western border of the Willamette River, and locals often spend their time fishing or kayaking. West Bank Park is a 50-acre natural area along the river’s banks, featuring paved and undeveloped paths for bikers and foot travelers. The West Bank Path travels toward several informal river access points, and the bikers access the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System. Several additional parks are either within walking distance or a mile from residents. Locals gather at Walnut Grove Park to see the turtle preserve, further exploring the park’s central pond and surrounding paths. The River Road Park and Recreation District features a recreation center at Emerald Park, which is popular for families who enjoy swimming. The recreation center also features ample programs for children, like gymnastics, youth camps and after-school care. Locals also walk to Rosetta Place Park, a pocket park with a playground and ample green space.

River Road's housing evolution
The River Road neighborhood was once farmland with Tudor Revival cottages and large farmhouses. In the middle of the last century, a housing boom drove out farms and nurseries in favor of ranch styles with large lawns. Housing remained steady, and a few farms remained until the early 21st century, when planned communities of three to four-bedroom homes replaced them. There are a few apartments and townhomes, but this area favors larger, detached homes. Housing prices range between $300,000 and $700,000. Narrow community backroads are tucked into leafy coves, without sidewalks or central yellow paint. The community’s primary thoroughfare and namesake, River Road, features four busy lanes flanked by additional housing and sidewalks where locals enjoy a stroll.

Hopping on the LTD
The Lane Transit District serves River Road, and bus stops scatter the community. “It’s easy to get from point A to point B in this area. Public transportation is easy to use and quickly accessible,” Richards says. The area is surrounded by busy roads, with the Northwest Expressway to its west, the Randy Pape Beltline to its north and River Road to its east. And the train running parallel to the Expressway makes the community susceptible to noise pollution. Locals commuting into Downtown Eugene have a 6-mile trip down Highway 132. The Eugene Airport is 5 miles from River Road, and when locals need to access a hospital, the Peace Health Sacred Heart Medical Center is 6 miles away.
