Downtown amenities and excitement in the core of Gloucester
Central Gloucester is in the center of the city and on the edge of Cape Ann, creating an exciting waterfront community filled with local businesses and annual events. In this dense downtown area, residents can find older New Englander and Colonial Revival homes just a short walk from the city's working waterfront, which has an assortment of docks, shops and parks. The community has access to the highway and the last station on the commuter rail, so Boston is within reach. “While there is a bump in tourism during the summer, most of the people that move here are from here or know someone in the area,” says Mark Vadala, a lifetime resident of Gloucester and a broker with Vadala Real Estate since 2001. “It’s an excellent community with something always going on.”
Fresh seafood options along Rogers Street
“There are always lots of options in the downtown area and along the waterfront,” Vadala says. “And very few of them are chain locations; most of the city is local business and boutiques, so you can really get a taste of local flavor.” One popular option is Tonno, a more upscale restaurant known for its fresh seafood with an Italian flair and extensive custom cocktails. Locals can also dine at Oak to Ember, a newer location with dockside dining where dishes are cooked in either a wood-fired grill or a 500-gallon smoker. Residents can shop at Market Basket or the Cape Ann Farmers Market every Thursday from June to October.

Trails and waterfront fun at Stage Fort Park
The Dogtown Original Settlement, where the first British settlers lived until they began the gradual move closer to the water, is now filled with hiking trails and historical markers across its hilly landscape. Closer to downtown, Stage Fort Park has plenty of beach and waterfront access alongside a dog park and sports fields. The park is also home to the famous Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial, which Vadala says is locally known as “The Man at the Wheel.” Additional playsets and sports fields can be found in the center of the neighborhood at Burnham's Field.

Densely packed waterfront homes from the 1800s
Most homes here were constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s in New Englander and Colonial Revival styles. Many homes have smaller lots and yards but are close to the waterfront and nearby parks. Many houses here have been converted into multi-unit and multifamily buildings. “Most of the multifamily properties are located in the downtown area,” Vadala says. Multi-unit properties typically fall between $300,000 and $700,000. Single-family residences run from $450,000 to $900,000, and some larger properties cost as much as $1 or $2 million.

Commuter rails and highways out of Cape Ann
Central Gloucester’s location and proximity to the water create an abundance of transportation options. Sidewalks line almost every street in the community, making daily trips to stores, parks and dining easy for residents. Residents are at the tail end of the Yankee Division Highway, which leads to U.S. Route 1 toward Boston, about a 35-mile commute. The Gloucester commuter rail station allows for an hour-long train ride into Boston’s North Station. The Addison Gilbert Hospital is just north of the neighborhood, and Boston Logan International Airport is 35 miles away.
Gloucester festivals by the water
The city of Gloucester hosts more than 15 major events throughout the year, many of which are in the Central Gloucester area or along the water. St Peters Fiesta, held each June, was started by an Italian fisherman who called Gloucester home. The event is filled with carnival food, rides, ceremonial parades and a boat horn blow that can be heard all around the Cape. “They also have the greasy pole event each year, which is super interesting to watch,” Valada says. In the event, contestants run up a diagonal greased pole in an attempt to grab the flag at the end. The community comes together by the waterfront again in September for the Gloucester Schooner Festival, a celebration with concerts, boat races and more.
