Hatfield is a rural residential community on the western bank of the Connecticut River, with acres of farmland, forests and a smattering of shops and restaurants. Farming is the heartbeat of the neighborhood, where there are over a dozen farmstands and some of the most fertile agricultural soils in Western Massachusetts. The town is home to about 3,000 people, but families with students at nearby universities come through for its quiet atmosphere and open fields. University of Massachusetts Amherst sits about 11 miles across the river, with Amherst College only a couple miles south. Hatfield is home to acres of farms and forests and is almost exclusively forested, with roads and a creek system flowing through it. The Hatfield Farm Museum brings agricultural enthusiasts to the area and is housed in a tobacco shed that belonged to one of the area’s earliest farmers. It showcases farm tools from the 19th and 20th centuries and points to the historical importance of farming in the community. The museum hosts cider pressing, textile demonstrations and live music, making it a gathering place for local events. The newspaper print shop-turned-boutique New England Inn, the Old Mill Inn, is available for visitors and locals, as General Manager, Gail Chevalier says, “those seeking a quiet and romantic night with twinkling lights and a homey, cozy feeling.” The inn is famous for Café Manager Shannon Blomstrom’s homemade biscuits and its own waterfall, which illuminates a blue light after sunset. “People staying in the suites by the water, or even those walking the hallways on that side of the building, hear a constant soothing sound. It’s a natural white noise machine,” Chevalier says.
