The 'older sibling' to nearby Fountain Square
Initially developed as a residential community southeast of Downtown Indianapolis in the late 19th century, Fletcher Place is one of Indy’s hottest neighborhoods in the 21st century thanks to its combination of historic homes, high walkability, proximity to the city’s biggest employers and a thriving culinary scene. And though Fletcher Place is closely connected to nearby Fountain Square, the neighborhoods have distinct identities despite their proximity. “Fountain Square is funky, electric, young,” says Laura Waters, a Fletcher Place resident and Realtor with EasyStreet Realty. “Fletcher Place is the older, more mature sibling.”
Eclectic coffee houses, award-winning restaurants and a classic dive bar
Fletcher Place is home to several of Indy’s most well-regarded restaurants. Bluebeard, named after the novel by Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut, is a farm-to-table eatery that was a semifinalist for the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America when it opened in 2012. Milktooth, set in a former Plymouth DeSoto dealership, is a breakfast and brunch spot that Bon Appetit named one of the country’s 10 best new restaurants in 2015. Bosphorus Istanbul Cafe is the lone Turkish restaurant in Indianapolis. Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee House, named for the neighborhood’s founder, is a popular neighborhood gathering spot. Amberson Coffee and Grocer, built in a former service station, serves its to-go coffee in reusable glass jars to cut down on waste. Chilly Water Brewing Company and Hotel Tango Distillery serve locally made libations. But even amid this cutting-edge culinary scene, the neighborhood’s most enduring institution is the no-frills Dugout Bar. First opened in 1954, the bar is adorned with pro-union bumper stickers, 1990s beer ads and photos of former regulars who have passed away. It's proud to be called a dive — in fact, Thrillist named it the top dive bar in Indiana. “It reminds me of drinking in my grandpa’s garage,” says resident Joe Tamborello, who calls the bar his favorite in Indianapolis.

A walkable and bikeable community with interstate access
Fletcher Place’s proximity to downtown is made clear by the sight of Indiana’s tallest building, Salesforce Tower, which still looms large over Virginia Avenue despite being a mile away. Similarly, the headquarters of Eli Lilly Co., Indy’s second-largest employer, is visible over McCarty Street, making it clear this is an ideally situated neighborhood for anyone working at Lilly or downtown. The IndyGo Red Line, the city’s first bus rapid transit system, has stopped along Virginia Avenue since its 2019 unveiling, though Waters says, “people in Indianapolis are still getting used to public transportation.” Indy’s medical corridor, which includes IU Health University Hospital and Eskenazi Hospital, is about 3.5 miles away. Traveling afar is easy thanks to the neighborhood's location at the junction of Interstates 65 and 70. Indianapolis International Airport is 15 miles from Fletcher Place. The Indianapolis Amtrak station is about a mile from the neighborhood.

Victorian-era houses and historic buildings repurposed as condos
Houses in Fletcher Place are from the Victorian era but aren’t grandiose mansions. Danish and Italian immigrant craftsmen made up much of the neighborhood’s original population, and the houses reflect their budgets. “It has a lot of diversity in housing styles, but they aren’t the three-story brick houses of the Old Northside,” Waters says. “It is a historic area, and the homes are cute, quaint and charming to look at.” Cottages, bungalows, Stick, Queen Anne and Italianate styles are all found in the neighborhood, with prices ranging between $300,000 and $750,000. Condos in the neighborhood vary from units built in historic former churches, schools and factories to recently constructed complexes on Virginia Avenue. Condo prices range between $250,000 and $725,000.

Indianapolis Cultural Trail connects Fletcher Place to other downtown neighborhoods
Edna Balz Lacy Park is more than a typical neighborhood park and playground. The century-old fixture also features bocce courts with leagues hosted by the Italian Heritage Society of Indiana. Fletcher Woods, located on a sliver of land near the interstate exit ramp, is highlighted by a gently winding path popular with neighborhood dog walkers. The brick-paved Indianapolis Cultural Trail along Virginia Avenue is another signature Fletcher Place feature. The trail system connects for 10 miles around downtown.

Holy Rosary Italian Street Festival an annual highlight
The Fletcher Place Neighborhood Association plays an active role in the community, hosting monthly meetings and committees. In the summer, the Fletcher Place Community Center in Fountain Square has a Saturday veggie stand at its community garden. But, the neighborhood’s biggest annual event is the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Italian Street Festival, which takes over Edna Balz Lacy Park and the streets in front of Holy Rosary over two nights each June. “My son tasted his first cannoli at the Italian Street Fest,” Tamborello says. “It’s a great event that really brings the whole neighborhood to life.” Neighborhood residents are also within walking distance of Colts games at Lucas Oil Stadium and Pacers or Fever games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse – the Cultural Trail leads directly to both stadiums.
