Surrounded by golf courses and desert vistas, La Quinta offers resort-style comforts in a luxurious Coachella Valley suburb. Founded as a resort community in 1926, La Quinta is one of the many Coachella Valley retreats that have flourished since their founding — this one earning the nickname "The Gem of the Desert” because of its popularity with the who’s who of Hollywood stars. “There’s an area called the La Quinta Resort that’s been around a long time, and back in the day, it was one of the big places for Hollywood stars to visit,” says John Sloan, Realtor with Keller Williams Luxury Homes. “The nickname comes from that, but also because the city is considered a premier playground for active living with a lot of golf courses, high-end retailers and the serenity of the desert.”

Expansive estates lit up by stars
Housing in La Quinta is mainly single-family, with Spanish- and Mission-inspired contemporary and ranch-style homes being the norm. Midcentury modern and Pueblo-style houses can also be found. Many residences sport landscaped yards with views of nearby fairways. Unit sizes range from 900 square feet up to 16,000 square feet. Condos and apartment buildings are also available. Houses typically sit along open cul-de-sacs and avenues, though some gated communities exist, too. Massive mansions and palatial estates sport giant inground pools and private courtyards. “What’s interesting about La Quinta is that in many of the areas, especially La Quinta Cove, there are no streetlights,” says Sloan, a 26-year resident of Palm Springs whose realty office is based in La Quinta. “The city really wants residents to be able to enjoy the stars at night, so they left the lights out.” Price tags in the area can be a bit lofty, ranging from the $600,000s to the $900,000s, with expansive estates ranging from just over $1 million to nearly $9 million.

Hike it out on the Cove Trailhead
Large palm and desert pine trees shade La Quinta's streets, parks and nature preserves. Grab a seat and soak in the lake and mountain views from Civic Center Campus Park near the La Quinta Library. La Quinta Park is the largest in the city, offering a playground and a skate park, as well as a seasonal splash park for residents wanting to beat the heat. Experience the stark beauty of the Coachella Valley and the Santa Rosa Mountains at Fred Wolff Nature Reserve, and since La Quinta is a resort community, several golf courses and country clubs offer stunning fairways and recreational centers. “There are also a lot of hiking areas that residents like,” says Sloan. “Andalusia has the Cove and residents can do their hiking on the Cove Trailhead.”

PGA West is a master-planned golf community surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains in La Quinta. “Everyone is here to just enjoy the weather, and it’s a very active area,” says Becky King, Realtor for Compass. “It’s gorgeous. The weather is incredible from October to May, and there are beautiful mountain views.” The weather, recreation and central location of PGA West make it a popular spot for vacation homes, but some residents live in the neighborhood full time: “I live here, I work here, I play here. I’ve been at PGA West since 2008, and I love it,” King says,
Homes in PGA West are a collection of luxury homes and condos, with options for residences on and off the fairways. “We have condos starting at $500,000 up to $5 million homes, so there’s something for everyone,” King says. Stucco walls and clay tile roofs inspired by Spanish and Mediterranean architecture adorn the exteriors. Spacious contemporary interiors blend seamlessly with ornate courtyards to balance indoor and outdoor space, and landscaped backyards and private pools are standard household amenities. “HOA takes care of landscaping, so everything is aesthetically pleasing,” King says.
In addition to seemingly limitless recreation opportunities in PGA West, residents are also at the center of high-profile events. “Coachella is held just a mile away each April, and every January, we have the American Express PGA Golf Tour come through here,” King says. Just outside of PGA West, Acrisure Arena opened in 2022 and holds over 11,000 people. “They’ve had a ton of good concerts there: The Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Stevie Nicks, Shania Twain, you name it. We also have a junior Hockey Team called the Firebirds,” King says.
“If you’re active, it’s the greatest place to live,” King says. “We have hiking trails, golf, pickle ball, bocce ball and polo tennis. There are three private clubhouses, a clubhouse and a restaurant.” Residents must be PGA West members to use the private facilities, including the six state-of-the-art private golf courses. There are also three public golf courses. PGA Residents also have access to the popular hiking trails and parks in La Quinta. The moderately challenging La Quinta Cover to Lake Cahuilla hike goes through PGA West Golf Course and finishes at Lake Cahuilla. Like other trails in the area, it is surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant is a steakhouse just outside PGA West. The restaurant is decorated with Arnold Palmer memorabilia and serves some of the golf legend’s favorite foods, like slow roasted prime rib and meatloaf. Another local favorite is Lavender Bistro, serving seafood, steak and pasta. Its outdoor dining patio is decked out with twinkly lights. PGA West residents can grab groceries at Ralphs, Vons and big-box stores like in La Quinta like Target, Walmart and Costo. El Paseo Shopping District in Palm Desert has high-end shops like Saks Fifth Avenue, Anthropologie, Louis Vuitton and many more.
PGA West is in La Quinta, about 130 miles from Los Angeles and 130 miles from San Diego. “It’s well situated. You’re two hours to the beach and two hours to go skiing at Big Bear Mountain Resort. You’re also about two hours from Disneyland,” King says. “Most people get around the neighborhood on their golf carts. Of course, you’ll need a car to go places outside the neighborhood.”
PGA West is strictly residential, and most residents only live in the neighborhood part time. However, the Desert Sands Unified School District serves students living in PGA West. Students may attend Harry S. Truman Elementary School and La Quinta Middle School. Both schools are located nearby in La Quinta and earned A-minus and B grades from Niche, respectively. La Quinta High School earned an A-minus and offers a variety of rigorous academic and career-oriented programs for students of every interest. These include International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, a medical health academy, a public service academy, a multilingual program and more.
A full golf membership with unlimited access to the community’s six private golf courses, three clubhouses, tennis and pickleball courts, and other amenities costs $60,000 upon joining, plus a monthly fee of $1,712. Memberships including access to the site’s amenities without unlimited golf access are also available.
Sheltered in high hedges and palm trees, it’s easy to see how the Hideaway neighborhood got its name. The gated resort community, located around 4 miles from La Quinta, is comprised of residential roads encircling the country club’s golf course. Behind the gate, residents’ lifestyle can be whatever they want – at least when it comes to their living space. "Over 80% of our community comprises custom homes. Unlike other communities, we don't have model homes," says Alyssa Cicero, Hideaway's Membership, Sales and Marketing Director. This upscale neighborhood is a luxury retreat in the midst of the Coachella Valley’s desert terrain.
An observer on the sidewalk along the public streets may catch a glimpse of terracotta roof tiles that crown the Spanish Mission and Mediterranean-style homes that make up most of the neighborhood. Although the architectural style is fairly cohesive, the homes themselves are anything but cookie-cutter. “Residents have had the unique opportunity to purchase a lot and work with an architect and builder to create a home that perfectly suits their preferences," Cicero says Streets weave between the 18 holes of the private golf course that defines the landscape, with lush green grass and glasslike ponds interspersed among the homes. Three-to-five-bedroom homes, many of which have private swimming pools, tend to sell for between $3 million and $6 million. Empty homesites are available for around $900,000 to $1.5 million.
Recreation is easy to come by in Hideaway, as the country club grants residents access to athletic facilities and a neighborly social scene. Two golf courses offer 18 holes of play, and the 51,000-square-foot clubhouse includes a fitness center and day spa. Residents who want to venture outside the shelter of the neighborhood can contact the Members Services team to organize outdoor activities throughout the Coachella Valley, including hikes, hot-air balloon rides, and mountain biking.
3 miles from the gates of Hideaway, Old Town La Quinta offers shopping and dining options for residents. Residents can stock up on groceries at the Tower Market grocery store and grab lunch at the Arroyos Café and Deli, which serves sandwiches and breakfast specialties. Old Town is home to several boutique shops, including H2o Closet, which sells curated products including specialty soaps, skincare, hair care, and personal fragrances. Main Street Coffee Company provides La Quinta residents with their caffeine fix and fresh pastries to fuel their shopping excursion. If Hideaway residents want to stay hidden, they can also get dinner at one of the dining venues at the clubhouse, including the Main Dining Room, Men’s Grill and the Patio overlooking the mountains.
Life in the Coachella Valley means that residents are never at a loss for things to do on the weekends. Even outside of the iconic music festival, the greater Palm Springs area is a hub for live music, sporting events, performances and more. Cicero says that the ongoing events are a big draw for residents. “This includes the renowned Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, exciting polo matches, the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament and various other events that contribute to the vibrant local lifestyle," she says. In addition, the Augustine Casino, five miles from the neighborhood, features 740 slot machines as well as dining options.
The Hideaway community is strictly residential, but children can receive public education through the Coachella Valley Unified School District, which serves about 17,000 students. For primary school, kids may attend Mountain Vista Elementary School, which earns a C-minus on Niche. Cahuilla Desert Academy Junior High School scores a C-minus, as well, and offers advanced courses and Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) programs. Coachella Valley High rates a C and has dozens of extracurricular opportunities, including a hiking club, water polo and an astronomy group.
Hideaway is largely a car-dependent neighborhood and is not served by any public transit. However, residents can easily get to California State Route 111 within 5 miles and Interstate 10 within 10 miles. Locals can drive 18 miles to the Palm Springs International Airport, which provides services to hundreds of cities around the world. For a road trip, Hideaway residents are about 140 miles from Los Angeles and San Diego. A Carbon Health Urgent Care facility is located within La Quinta, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital is less than 6 miles away.
