Arlington
Year-round recreation at Silverado Park
Silverado Park in Upper Westside is one of the city's busier parks, with an active community center providing afterschool and youth programs, summer camps and classes for seniors. "They put in a whole aquatic center that's really nice," says Applegate. "I used to take my son there for swimming events." A gymnasium was added in the 1980s and is undergoing renovation in 2024 to add a new roof and flooring. "Silverado has everything from afterschool drop-in for ages five to 12 for recreation activities or homework help, and a nice teen center," says Grobaty. "We also have a big senior program, so there's lots to offer everyone in the family. Our Be S.A.F.E. program, which stands for Summer Activity in a Friendly Environment, offers dance classes, crafts and movies." Local sports leagues rent the park's fields, and the park offers its own sports programs. The 1-acre Tanaka Park, equipped with a playground and basketball half-court, is walkable in the community's north end.Midcentury single-family and modern mobile homes
Charming traditional homes with neatly landscaped yards are the norm, and there are a variety of mobile homes in Windward Village. Mobile homes ask between $150,000 and $250,000 depending on construction date, with some built in the early 2000s. Single-family options range from $650,000 to $725,000, primarily based on size. Homes sit tightly together on narrow paved streets with tree-lined sidewalks on both sides.A-grade Long Beach Unified School District
Long Beach Unified School District earns an A on Niche. Kids start at Webster Elementary and head to Stephens Middle School, both given a B-minus. Cabrillo High, scoring a B, features a popular Academy of Global Logistics, known as AGL. Through a partnership with the Port of Long Beach, AGL prepares students for careers in supply chain management and international trade.Fantastic Burgers, Vera's Market for Mexican and nearby malls
Within the neighborhood, Vera's Market is a quick grocery go-to with an in-house kitchen serving fresh Mexican fare. Homestyle stop-ins for quick bites line Santa Fe Avenue, such as Fantastic Burgers, which serves up all-day breakfast, burgers and Mexican food. Across the street, Mrs. Chapman's Angel Food Donuts sports an iconic supersize donut-shape sign, famous since the 1950s. Plenty of other restaurants, retailers, large-name grocers and big-box stores fill area malls within driving distance, including Long Beach Town Center 10 miles east and City Place Shopping Center 5 miles south.Close to major freeways and Long Beach Airport
Arlington's location allows for convenient travel in and out of the neighborhood. With Interstate 405 forming its north side, residents can easily access Long Beach and Los Angeles. To the east, Interstate 710 heads south to employers in downtown Long Beach and waterfront recreation. Crossing the Los Angeles River, the 405 heads east to Long Beach Airport in a 6-mile, 10-minute drive for domestic flights on most major airlines. Long Beach Transit bus stops are available along Santa Fe Avenue and Wardlow Road.Spring Grand Prix and Christmas festival
As one of nearly 80 neighborhoods comprising Long Beach, Arlington residents can join their fellow city-dwellers at a host of city-sponsored events. Each April, the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach zooms around downtown, and every December, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting is a dazzling event with fireworks, live music, food trucks and selfie stations.
