Los Cerritos offers spacious homes with a rich history

Tucked into the north side of Long Beach, Los Cerritos is a spacious neighborhood with some of the city’s most expensive homes. Established in the early 1900s on the land surrounding the historic Rancho Los Cerritos estate, the community has a suburban, tree-lined charm that's hard to find elsewhere in the city. The nearby Virginia Country Club adds an exclusive feel, and several of the neighborhood's early-20th-century houses have even been featured in Hollywood films. Beyond the homes themselves, you’ll find local parks, top-rated schools and easy access to the dining and shopping in Bixby Knolls.

Standout architecture in homes that have Hollywood ties

Los Cerritos is known for its unique architecture, with well-preserved Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival homes lining the streets. Mix in some modest bungalows and ranch-style houses, and the whole neighborhood feels like a classic slice of suburbia. It's so quintessential, in fact, that the neighborhood’s homes have been the backdrop for several iconic Hollywood films, including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "American Pie" and "Donnie Darko."

According to Angie Rebennack, a Realtor with Keller Williams Pacific Estates with more than nine years of experience in the city, the historic architecture is the main draw. “You’ll see hardwood floors, leaded glass windows…soaring ceilings, big sweeping staircases with wrought-iron work. It makes you think of glamorous old Hollywood.” She also notes that, unlike places like California Heights or Bluff Park, this is not a registered historic district, so you have a lot more flexibility to make renovations.

The cost of homes is among Long Beach’s highest

Most homes sell for $1 million to $2 million, but larger properties near the Virginia Country Club are often priced between $3 million and $4 million. Occasional condos offer a lower-priced alternative, from $500,000 to the mid-$600,000s. With a median single-family home price of over $1.6 million, it’s one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Long Beach.

The Virginia Country Club is invitation-only

Virginia Country Club has fewer than 500 members and an invitation-only policy. It’s also one of Long Beach's oldest clubs, dating back more than a century. Members can access the clubhouse’s dining room and bar, and of course, the 18-hole golf course, which butts up against the backyards of several homes in Los Cerritos.

Local parks and historic attractions at Rancho Los Cerritos

While the golf course is a center point for the neighborhood, the neighborhood is also home to public parks, nature trails and bike paths. Green space is one of the main draws to the area, including:

  • Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, a free-admission estate with an 1844 adobe home, manicured gardens and rotating event programming
  • Los Cerritos Park, a neighborhood park with a treehouse-themed playground, lighted tennis courts and a free summer concert series
  • Dominguez Gap Wetlands, a preserved nature area with a 2-mile trail often used for jogging and birdwatching
  • Los Angeles River Trail, a paved bikeway running along the LA River right through the neighborhood, connecting riders to the Long Beach shoreline
“The historic site of Rancho Los Cerritos is one of the most important parts of the neighborhood,” Rebennack says. “It’s truly so beautiful.”
