Longwood's quiet streets on the edge of northern Long Beach

If you’re searching for a lower-priced pocket of northern Long Beach with room to grow, Longwood is worth a closer look. This laid-back neighborhood is known for its midcentury homes, many of which have detached garages that could be converted into accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The neighborhood itself has a tree-lined, tucked-away feel, but you're sandwiched between an industrial district and Interstate 710. The upside is that the 710 puts you about 15 minutes from Downtown Long Beach. Around the neighborhood, Coolidge Park is a popular green space less than a mile away, and Long Beach Boulevard has some casual spots to grab a bite.

Midcentury single-family homes with ADU potential

Longwood feels like a snapshot of the mid-1950s, with mainly bungalows and ranch-style homes. These older homes have hardwood floors, covered patios and detached garages, and many have been updated over the years. The detached garages can also be converted into ADUs, a popular trend in Long Beach that adds living or rental space.

Homes generally range from the mid-$600,000s to the lower $800,000s, with freshly renovated or multifamily properties selling for over $1 million. Prices run higher than nearby Compton but below the Long Beach median. "It's more affordable than other Long Beach neighborhoods," says Realtor Brenda Pena of Century 21 Allstars, who has over a decade of experience in the area. "It has some streets that are in a pretty nice area for an affordable price."

Long Beach public schools offer career pathways

This neighborhood falls within the Long Beach Unified School District. Kids here are zoned for Colin Powell Academy for Success, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school just across Victoria Street. From there, students head to Jordan High School, which offers specialized career pathways including Aspirations in Medical Sciences. This program partners with local hospitals to help students earn real-world certifications.

Community programs at Coolidge Park

Coolidge Park is less than a mile away, with a lighted baseball diamond, basketball courts, a community center and a dog park. The city runs the Summer Fun Days program at the park, a free weekday program where kids can drop in to play sports and do arts and crafts. Kids 18 and under can also get free meals during summer weekdays through the USDA Summer Food Service Program.

Longwood is conveniently close to the 710

You're right next to Interstate 710 and state Route 91, yet road noise here is less noticeable than in Coolidge Triangle. Hop on the 710, and Long Beach is about 9 miles away, usually a 15-minute trip. Head north to Los Angeles, about 20 miles away, with commute times typically ranging from 30 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic. Long Beach Transit buses run through the area, and the Metro A Line Artesia station is less than 2 miles north.

Casual dining on Long Beach Boulevard

Longwood is a residential neighborhood bordered by an industrial area, so walkable retail is limited. That said, there are a few casual spots along Long Beach Boulevard, including:

  • Los Albertt’s Fresh Mexican Food, a no-frills spot known for generous portions of taquitos and burritos
  • Sal’s Gumbo Shack, a Louisiana-inspired soul food restaurant serving gumbo, jambalaya and candied yams
  • Golden Burger, a neighborhood burger joint that also serves teriyaki plates
For grocery runs, the Gateway Towne Center is 2 miles away with Target and Aldi.

Community events on the north side of Long Beach

If you don’t feel like driving 15 minutes into downtown, the north side of the city has some things going on, too. Here are some popular nearby events:

  • Uptown Jazz Festival, a free annual festival at Houghton Park that draws thousands for an afternoon of live jazz
  • First Fridays Bixby Knolls, a monthly block party where businesses along Atlantic Avenue stay open late with live music and local art
